I've been trying to figure out how to get a correct depth in original (not drawn from life) pictures. No exaggerated perspectives for me please! Unless there's a good reason for it, I'd like my perspective the way the eye sees it.
I came across this little passage in Rex Vicat Cole's "Perspective for Artists:"
I think I understand what he's getting at - the one place where you would be able to correctly draw a square or a 90 degree angle at a correct, known depth, on the plane leading to the horizon, would be at your own feet. But it seems to me that for the trick to work you'd have to be able to place the "Painter" (the point of the 90 degree angle in his illustration) accurately in relation to the picture. How to place the painter accurately must be blindingly obvious as Mr. Cole does not explain it. All the same, I'm stumped. Can anyone enlighten me? |

There's a lot you might want to know ... cone of vision, central axis of vision and so on if you want to avoid distortion.
There's a link to a tutorial that shows how to fake proper, undistorted perspective in this

This might also be interesting.

Or check out the loomis books. Search for "perspective the artist should know" in either Successful Drawing or Creative Illustration.

Sorry I didn't understand most of what you wrote. Hope this helps _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

Thanks! I'll have to check out the books mentioned in the thread you linked to. The one I bought looked good enough when I got it but it didn't even get into 3 point perspective! |
