hey how's it going? i'm new to this forum. most of my posting has been done on ConceptArt.org (same user name). i'm really interested in getting into concept art/design (for movies) and sure would appreciate any help, tips and pointers you guys can offer. i'm 26.... and i'm giving myself till i'm 30 to get into an art job (deadlines, deadlines, deadlines....). i'm looking for color programs (there is one called tiger something i think) that'll let you come up with color themes i guess (like orange and blues, um, complimentary colors, etc.) just anything really. and for those of you in the business, can you just do character concepts (i think that's my strong point) or should you just learn all aspects. all in all i need any help that can be given (besides, draw eeryday, get an anatomy book, practice, etc... all those i've heard and know). send me a message either here or conceptart. thanks!!! _________________ would you believe i'm blind?

It's hard to respond to you because you're being really vague about what you want. Are you just looking for some interesting program? Are you interested in knowing what skill level you need to be at to find a job? Are you trying to figure out what skill sets you need? I'm really unsure, so I'll just tell you what I would do in your situation, because I was right where you are two years ago.
You sound like you're not sure sure of exactly what you want to do or what you need to know, and perhaps you need a bit of structured learning. I say get into school ASAP. It will help you learn what you need to know, get an idea of the skill level that you need to have, and you'll come out with a handy degree at the end. I have two more years to go, and I wish I'd done it years ago. Good luck whatever path you choose. |

i am basically looking for help with color. i can draw black and white fine, but when it comes to coloring i jusr lose it. i have been reading jason manly's post about color theroy which is fantastic but i want more!!
and i want to know what it takes to make it in concept art for movies. what is it i need to know to get a job? entry lever perhaps? i was told that talent is more important than a degree. just whatever input anyone can offer. i really do appreciate it! thanks a lot! _________________ would you believe i'm blind?

Hello
I just turned 26 too and I am in the same situation as you. I hope to get into some sort of school and hopefully learn more color theory there, otherwise there is books and tutorials on the net but I like to find out my own style and I also like to experiment a lot, but books are really good, and also looking at other peoples Art-pieces and see how they solved a thing, how they added paint and etc...
What I have understood with Conceptartist its important to make pieces that impress people, either with an own style or by just making great art.
Otherwise, and I think that is what the most people here in Sijun thinks and that is too Paint and draw 24/7, use reference, do Life-studies and keep the Goodbrush steady as Craig Mullins do. :)
I need to make life-studies too....hmm, cant find someone to sit for me thou...hehe

I wasn't suggesting school so you could get a degree, I was suggesting it because you'll surround yourself with people that have a similar love for art. By looking at their work, you'll get a better idea of what level you're at and what level you need to get to. When you finish school, you'll have (theoretically) a portfolio with what you need to get a job. The degree may or may not come in handy, but it's not really the point. |
