How is this Work In Progress?

Ok some random thoughts ...

Successful Drawing by Loomis might be a good book to start with.
There's theory like perspective, basic shapes and shading. (Stuff you should learn before you tackle anatomy for example):
http://www.gameartworks.com/LoomisBooks/successful/page_01.htm
Try to make drawings with a pencil ... perspective drawings with a ruler for example ... or just try to copy some of the images accurately.

Creative Illustration is another great book for basics. It concentrates more on things like composition, values/tones and later color.
http://www.fineart.sk/loomis/page_01.htm
I'd try to practice that stuff digitally ... like value studies, quick sketches or tonal plans (you'll see).

As long as you are learning there's no such thing as cheating ... as long as you say what you did when you show your pictures.
So try to copy other artists work and draw/paint from reference before you try to come up with your own creations or style.
And concentrate on what you're learning. If you're trying to get values down for example trace lineart if you have to.

For anatomy read "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" and "Drawing The Heads And Hands"

I'm not sure if you need a "how to draw" book.
If you come to a point when you think you lack any talent buy "Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain" by Betty Edwards.
But don't just do the exercises ... the text is what I think can help even more.

I don't know if you want to learn about concept design or if you want to get into digital art at all.
You might want to check out these books if you do.

Draw, draw, draw... etc.
Paint, paint. paint. sketch, doodle, as often as possible.
That's one way of getting good.
I know of no methods for improving other than practice; practice makes perfect.

andyT: this is to help my work progress Laughing
i always thought of starting off with the figure and then going into the other stuff, but with ur advice i'll try learning other stuff first.
btw... THANK YOU FOR THE LINKS!!!! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

captfred: i do doodle a lot but i realize that i draw bodies through my memories.. and my memory doesn't have acurate body proportions thats why i'm looking for books for references and also to learn more.

the other thing is.. i think there are 2 types of artists the kind that need to be taught and the kind that can learn on their own (w/o books or teachers). i think i'm the kind that has to be taught... so i'm looking around to find ways to improve myself. but thats just my opinion @_@
