Thanks! Yeh, it's Photoshop. I do use brushes, but mostly for effects these days. You guessed correctly, I hand draw the image, scan it, tweek the lines, block in the colour flat - usualy using a separate layer for each body part - then paint in the light and shadow using the gradient tool.
I use brushes for finer detail, but that's about it.
Thanks again! _________________ "Pass me the banjo, that one there, good lad." -Socrates |

"Low skilled" my ass! The last two images in particular display an illustrative style that's developing well and looks great!

hope u ppl find it okay, man you ppl are godly!
shin: o_o ...nothing to say.. just.. wonderful.. i love that second one!
kodiak: whoa.. lovely mechanical design! haha butter-cut walls ! cool!
michael: loved that first one!!
dammit all u ppl have such a sweet illustrative painterly style :<
viag: second one, with blues and funky brushes... 0_0
EDIT:
feerik: powah!!! too bright for my tastes but i dun want to know what u can do with a longer timeframe... too cool! so much confidence in your work.. your strokes are great!
capt. fred: hehe... never forgot that old design..marching zombie robots "raaaaaar raar" >:p
stereophoenix: the DSG sketch is cool! looks like a little Calibretto-impressionist by madueria(sp?)
and Matthew: shit i got to have your discipline man... you are improving so much!! i must be more hardworking now.. im inspired!!! so many sweet pieces from you
farley: kewl:>
arcipello: saw ur work at deviantart 0_0 saw your work here.. so.. thats nothing short of amazing! such detail! wondewrful lighting, really brings out the character...

no... appleseed by: shirow massamune? creator of ghost in the shell? that genius? haha.. appleseed is 'slave-mtion' concept.. mines just a 'mobiel doll' :>
anyway thanks so much!!
not muhc robotica.. more like parts.. was trying to be atmospheric.. once more, i failed. i dont understand how you ppl plan your work to hold emotional qualities? the biggest challenge for me is colours... they can do so much, but when u dont understand you just shoot yourself in the foot >_<
i need to explore!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /me waves fist
this is a oilrig-type base out at the far reaches of a post-apocalyptic shore... the mist is just floating in, so for the meantime the bay is quite clear!
i always have this fear of using too many colours.. somehow to me that doesnt work for my shit pics.. so i max out at about 3-4 colours, but vary the tones... so...
hopefully some of you guys can drop a tip or two? paintover my pics to hell? anything! thanks! |

Yeah !! UkiTakuMuki is back. Nice to see you again in my new Robot Thread, I was gonna ask for you in this Thread but then you showed up.
I decided to leave my Mecha Thread and then make a Robot Thread instead cause I think my Mechas looked like Robots anyway ....hehe.
btw Thank you Uki for comment my work. Your platform and robot is supernice.
buki - you are not flooding those are great.
Bob - Thank you.
And as always, all the Robots is Awesome, keep em coming.
Heres my latest, a pencil sketch I made with an HB pen and a 4H for the darker outlines. the back is black ink. You can probably see from Whom I got my inspiration.
Keep the Robots alive and running

Balistic! sweeet!!!! i especially love the diver one :> the texture u made really makes it seem more murky and i can almost feel the currents!
+ i love the design of the diver unit the most, reminds me of MAKK armour series...
heres an hour sketch...
as usual.. my stinky limited pallette of colours... -__- |

hey, thank you all =)
UkiTakuMuki: I think the last one doesn't have any disadvantages because it has only a few colors. Looks cool to me.
balistic: i love the first one. nice colors
Daniel: you should post your other robot-pictures. But this comicrobot still looks cute =)
nexusnet: hey, this comic page looks damn good.
lunatic: the last one is just awesome. How do you create those clean grandients? Do you use the grandient tool, or did you take the brush + much time? _________________ I love vegetables and fruits |

Now, these are really old and I truly regret not having any recent stuff to post but still they are robots so for the sake of filling this thread with color I post them...
(this one is an unfinished painting)
This one actually is not that old. It was a concept for the propeller thread that never happened to be rendered:

Now, this one is not capable of killling hundreds of people in a glimpse ... in fact he ist not even capable of picking up the cube in front of him without beeing plugged to a 3inch cable ...

daniel lieske: 0__0'' ..wow. you do love multiple colorued lighting sources dont u :p i love those concepts of yours!! so much shirow inspiration from those.. (thats how i feel, not saying anyting) I especially love the flight mecha, for the propellor thread. Now thats very policenauts and gundam! cooool! That has to be the coolest mecha design ive seen in a loong loong time. no sucking up > just plain serious(5 of my friends think so too). dammit, if tha was a game model..... for some mod or something... dammit! ;0~~
matthew: keep up the good work! i like your pure digital paints much more though.. they have a more complete feel... i dunno.. i guess im starting to like pure digital paints as well... i hope i practise hard enough so it comes easier to me! |

With the gradient tool. I usually lay down a flat colour to start with and then layer up opaque -to-transparent gradients on-top of that. I also use heavily feathered lasso selections as well to give the appearance of curved surfaces.
I suppose it's a bit like water colour really - building up washes of semi-transparent colour to create a sense of depth. _________________ "Pass me the banjo, that one there, good lad." -Socrates |

UkiTakuMuki - Thank you Yeah I think I am starting to get a better grip on my wacom pen now, but I have to keep drawing all the time cause otherwise I will forget how to draw ...hehe.
Good work there Bob
Heres another one from me, I painted and laid out all the detail but I wanted it to look more simplified so I throwed on one filter in the end process and it made the robot to look kind of chunky, what do you Robot creators think? is it a throw in the recycle bin or should I keep it?
Let the Robot force Flow
