after being idling in the background for ages, i'll just post my second pic on the forums.
i know this isn't digital art but i was wondering if you guys have any tips on how to start coloring it digitally?
pencil on rough A3 paper (had to scan it in 2 parts, my scanner isn't big enough, hence the line in the middle which i didn't remove digitally)
i don't think prohosting allows for image linking, so the address to it is here

(i think you have to c/p it into the address bar. clicking on it gives the 404 error):
http://cloud.prohosting.com/heykey/frog.jpg
and yeah the normal "c/c are welcome" applies Wink

Hehe this is nice =]

but one thing though, the anatomy on his left arm is wrong, his bicep should not be looking up like that, but directed toward us.

Very interesting character!
Before you leap into color (get it? leap? Laughing) I would recommend cleaning up that scan first.
Try converting it to greyscale, to get rid of some of the color noise, and use whatever levels control you can to fix the white and black point.
From there, use a small brush and start painting out the stray nicks, smudges and strokes that make it look dirty. Smile

One of the disadvantages you have here that will make it difficult when you begin to add color is the amount of pencilwork there is.
See how dark some of the areas are now, imagine how much darker they'll be when you add various shades to them... like if you were to do a dark green on the legs - all the pencil shading will just pull out any light you have.

As far as where to begin for color?

Not sure what painting program you were going to go with, but I would recommend photoshop, to get the art on a layer set to 'multiply', then paint blocks of color underneath.

Once you get blocks of color, you should think very hard about where your color highlights are going to land. That ball in the center is a great place to start. Good lighting is KEY to a successful color job.
Naturally, highlights and shadows will give your frog some depth - but color highlighting is what gives it environment.

Take a look at one of my works in-progress and you'll see the things I talked about: http://www.80pstudios.com/inprog/dragontude_inprog.jpg

Granted, this is only the way I approach it. Other people have thier own methods. Keep at it, and you'll find things that will work better for you.

Here's a link to a site with tutorials that made a tenfold difference in my technique: http://www.merekatcreations.com/

Good luck!
Anton

paranoid?: thnx, i was a aware of the anatomy flaw, thank you for pointing it out tho. makes me think about sketching in the future Razz
the thing is, i first drew the hand going up like the other hand, but then thought it would be dull and too symmetrical, changing the arm in another way. at that point i forgot to check the anatomy and colored it blindly X)
after looking at the almost-finished pic, i started to see his hand is fu*ked up. i didn't want to erase it anymore tho as it would have made a mess.

4nton: thank you. hah, took me awhile to get that leap thing haha. about the coloring. i have thought it again and i'm not sure if i want to do it. yet you made me realize that if i was to color it, i should indeed remove the pencil shadings, but instead of erasing them, i was thinking of an onion layer and on top of that a layer to draw just the outlines again (i read about that somewhere in this site). oh, and those sites are very helpful. tut's are always fun to read and learn from. maybe i'll just have to forget the frog and get back to it and color it after a few years, so i can contribute in that other trhead where people re-draw and enhance their old drawings Wink

zap.br: if you copied the address and pasted it in the address bar and hit enter and still didn't work, maybe prohosting was down. works now at least for me.

xbytes: thank you. yeah i don't exactly know how to color it. and if i ever will, i'm not the right person to learn from Razz
