Tao Feng was developed by Studio Gigante for Xbox. Soon to be released!

edit-Oops, sorry Ed, goto goodbrush.com and look under the gallery heading.

As I remarked there, I abused the wide lens as these were to contain a lot of information about the environment. Josh Tsui, the art director, would send me a paragraph and a plan view with notes and I would generally build something in 3-d (witness my pathetic 3-d skills) and then paint two roughs and send them off for one to be picked. I would then collect references from around the net and get at it, with more attention to textural information and fewer lost edges than I would normally use. They needed to have ambience, but they needed to be direction for texture artists and modelers as well.

The 3-d was very helpful in picking and generating a perspective. Given that they are a wide lens, 3-d can do this easily. Would have been simpler to wing it if the lens were longer. But since people were going to have to build this stuff, no Escher-isms were allowed.

Yeah, that's good modeling skill Craig. Wink Was it done in Electric Imagee?

Well, it seems like they've given you ample photo reference, and floor plan helps too. I would be interested in how your going to approach this and of course how the final painting would look.

I just browsed the images, and my jaw dopped and slammed hard into the keyboard. Even though the images were done for reference to other artists I think this is your most competent work to date.

You're the man, spooge.

How much time did you spend on them?

Cheers,
Mon

You are, indeed, the man. Did you have fun doing these? There is a sense of vertigo from the wide-angle lens that makes them more overwhelming/impressive.

Absolutely Incredible.. Visually Stunning work.
As with all of your works, Colour, Light, Texture, Composition and Imagination all off the scales..

I'm sure they will be a great source of inspiration.
I had not heard of game companies outsourcing for freelance concept artwork before, only in house.
I guess with a portfolio like yours tho....

You dont do a MasterClass do you craig? Laughing

Hehe, cool, I was actually browsing through the gallery before I saw the post here.

Out of interest, do you have the 3D image on another monitor, print it out etc. or is it just to get the image seated in your mind?

Van Damn those are sweet... Shocked

I'm curious to know, how long did this project take you?

Wait, let me guess... 3 months? Shorter/longer?

Anyway, damn fine work, but you don't need me to tell you that. Wink

Take it easy,
~M~

Hot damn, this serves to remind me of my need to save every single image you ever make as inspiration. It also makes me want to buy an x-box for this game. And dammit they better not ruin it with art this good heh.

Fantastic! The colours are beautiful, and these wide-angle compositions really gave me a sense of being there.

Yeah Very Happy You took Sumaleths advice. Very Happy
Those are super-great especially the ones with the strong FOV in the garden with green water and grass.
I asked in the Speedpainting thread about FOV distortion but I guess the 3d answers my question.
How would you do if you wanted to wing it instead? is that perspective measurement?

Keep the Goodbrush Steady and have a nice weekend

You'd think that after a little while I'd stop being so astonished that you're this good. Apparently not, though. Amazing work, Craig.

Some of this stuff is far and away my favourite work from you. Thanks for sharing it.

Craig, these are fantastic. I haven't seen so many works of yours on a single project for a long time. Beautiful lighting as always, amazingly rendered. You're the only one man. Really. Cheers.

Must be a massive game being developed if they're going to translate those types of images into a video game format...

Very nice work, I'm guessing the people you were working for were happy with what you did?

Also you work in photoshop correct? And you have multitudes of your own custom brushes... are your brushes just designs you made up or things based off of tools and brushes you've worked with for traditional art?
You seem to get a lot of detail into tiles and whatnot but they look done in a way you would with a paint knife or scaper on top of a fuzzy brush. Jus wondering...

Hello everyone.

I'm a bit drunk whn I'm writing this, but I hope you don't mind...

First of all, I would just like to say that, Craig,, you are an awesome artist, and I hope you keep on doing your artworks for many years ahead. I think I speek for all of us when I say you are an inspiration for all of us. All your works looks so simple, yet they are filled with details and complexity, and it's a true pleasure to watch every single one of them. I have wanted to say this to you for quite some time, but never found the right spott or time, so why not here and now? The same goes for Scott Robertson (he creates some of the coolest stuff I've ever seen).

As this is my first post on this forum (but not my first visit), I must say that it's a joyride everytime I visit these forums. There is so much to find here.

Well,, I had thought to write down some more stuff here, but I guess I have to do that another time (need sleep,, haven't sleept for ages),,, but once again.. it is a true pleasure.

Keep up the good work!

Yes, that toa feng stuff is very very very .. very good.

Buuut it's less involved and more disspasioante; about showing off room design instead of telling stories and capturing moments. As 'art' this is unsurpringly less pleasing than you stuff in the skethes section, it is more technical and more technically impressive.

Although, the same pleasure can be had from looking at how brush marks, meaningless in themselves and even in their nearest surroundings, transfrom into real volume when seen incontext of the whole.

cool! Very Happy

Hey Spooge. They've been showing this game on Extended Play on Tech TV and it's nice to see what they did with your designs. The museum one and the courtyard one really came out looking so much like what you painted. I really didn't get a good look at the other ones but I'm sure they're just as great.

I think I'll pick up the game just cause you worked on it. Very Happy

Love the paintings too. Smile
