What is your ultimate favorite peice of art? That one picture or sculpture that you could stare at for hours?
Heres mine. Its called restrictions by John Pitre. He is my favorite artist.

Ahhhh. Good idea for a post. Here's mine.
Never heard of John Pitre, but I did a search and he's awesome! He's kinda like a fine art guy who once saw Boris Vallejo's work.
Here's one of my favs. I don't have an ultimate since there are just too many.
This one's by J W Waterhouse.
La Belle Dame Sans Merci

there's a very beautiful old religious sculpture that I absolutely love...darnit, I can't remember the name of it or the artist (probably a famous sculptor)
it's very old, though, and quite exquisite. I'll have to look it up and post back later. |

It's called "The Old Guitarist" by Picasso. I just love his blue period paintings so much. I have a poster of the same painting in my room and it's worth every dollar.

One of my favourites . . . It's a Lord of the Rings illustration by John Howe. I just love it.

Hans Reudi Giger. No doubt about that. No other art gives me as strong feelingd as giger's work. Hard to pick a favourite though....I really like the enviroments and matte-paintings he did for the alien-movies....But after all, i think i like his women most. This is one of giger's paintings of his former partner Li. I love the way he merges the face background, Like if it was interacting with all the biomechanical stuff, but still he manages to keep her buetiful.
Li ended her life with a bullet becouse of depressions...That may explain some of the shapes of the background.

Because he does so much with so little:
"Buzzing" by Jeremy A. Engleman

I couldn't say that I have an overall favorite piece of artwork though . . . I enjoy looking at art, but to me its always been something that was merely communicative, and not something to be marveled at. |

Well, there's something about Roger Dean's work that I've always admired.
I like this one in particular. The background seems lifeless and cold... and yet the foreground is green and lush.

girl with a pearl earring, by Johannes Vermeer.
I love the girl's expression, and the fact that the rendering of the hat is almost impressionistic.

Wow, some really great choices here (the Giger and John Howe would be high up my faves list too).
But this one is my all-time fave painting;
Jim Burn's cover art for Peter F. Hamilton's epic scifi novel, The Reality Dysfunction. It's effect on my probably has something to do with my love of the book.

zaar: Thanks for sharing, I've never seen any paintings by these artists before and I'm impressed. I especially like the self-portrait of Helene Schjerfbeck, it's simple and effective. I love paintings like that. |
