This is the first posting I made with one of my own art. I must say that I'm very ! I want to try to color it with Photoshop, but since I have no notion at all with CG painting I'm asking some help from you guys.
This is the drawing I made a few years ago that I want to color (It's Queen Amidala from Star Wars Episode I) :
Can someone tell me where I could find some information about that... or just tell me some tips and tricks on how or where to begin with that...
Thanks alot to everyone !! _________________ What we see now is like a dim image in a mirror, then we shall see face to face. |

Just a bit of C&C:
Her right eye looks like she has Down's Syndrome, otherwise, it's a great drawing. _________________ The Syn |

Hey, I'm no guru, but I reckon the best place to start if you want to colour it digitally is just to open up whatever program you've got for colouring it with and start mucking about, experimenting, trying things, learning by doing, instead of reading a tutorial which is more passive and worse. Just colour away, figure it out as you go. Make some steps into the unknown, alone, and don't forget to Have Fun! |

Okay I'll give you some quick easy things to start with if you want to learn photoshop.
-Learn what the major tools are on the side and what they do. What kind of different effects you can obtain with them etc... you'll mostly color, by the standards here, with the airbrush tool. You shouldn't really use the smudge, blur, color dodge & color burn tools as they don't let you have complete control over the picture. However these tools are fun when starting to get an idea for how your picture can be made.
-Delve into creating some new layers, learn about their blending modes... this is pretty much what photoshop is all about.
The easiest way I'd suggest you learn to color would be to create 1 new layer above the lineart layer, change its mode to "multiply" then grab the airbrush tool and start painting colors onto the screen. I am kinda chucking you into the deep end with this lack of explanation but it will help you figure things out...
There are some great tutorials around for digital coloring... you shouldn't need help finding them. But some good advice would be to do a search on the forums (the magnifying glass at the upper right of this window) for the word "tutorial". _________________ I could be an arse and write long signatures but I won't! |

Well I agree with the mucking about and testing out photoshops tools n bits n everything but I don't really think you'd want to use the airbrush to start off over the line art... maybe use the paintbrush with solid block colors to get major color shapes in first then switch it to 40% opacity and fill in the other different colors n blending. Then when everythings said n done for that maybe get into it with the airbrush because if you start with the airbrush you will try to immediately make it nice and perfect. But then again people have gotten to the point where they just jump right in with an airbrush and do pretty well. It is just harder for ppl starting out I think.
AFTER you get basics down (and maybe a bit further into it) then tutorials DO come in handy when it comes to doing things you may be stuck on (perspectives, coloring, shading methods). Btw you don't have to stick to what a tutorial says. Just think of them as what an art teacher says and do your own things with it (not sticking like glue to what it says). Come up with your own way to work thats most comfortable to you before you devote your time to following in someone elses footprints.
Most of all, don't stress if it gets too complicated or hard, take a breather or something because you won't master everything in a day or a week or a year or even 10 :p. Just have fun. That is what art is supposed to be to me, even if it is a job it should still be fun and interesting, always learning.
Good luck! _________________ Meep meep |
