Are you suggesting we send you artwork, which you can pass off as your own in a portfolio? ![Shocked](images/smiles/icon_eek.gif) _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

If you would like help, show us your work. And that Loomis book is probably the best help you're going to lay your eyes on until you are in art school if you do't know what you're doing _________________ j.mascho |

Well, Jason, you're really not making much sense here... just whining for help!!!
I would suggest that you acquire some books on figure and/or anatomy drawing, get yourself tanked up on coffee and begin drawing... I repeat... draw... _________________ HonePie.com

Um it's not that hard to find help. You're basically at one of the most helpful forums on the net.
There are so many freaken tutorials lying around the net. Just search for them!!
That or just start drawing. ![Rolling Eyes](images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif) |

Yeah right. Loomis sucks. Now Fred Flick Stone has to write a tutorial for Jason . How weird is that?
You can't draw figures!? ... can you draw at all? Why does Loomis suck?
Nobody said you steal work ... they just asked what kind of help you want.
You want an artist to write a tutorial that is better than Figure Drawing For All It's Worth?
Try other boards ... maybe you have more luck. _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |

If you really want to become more proficient in drawing people I recommend taking life drawing classes with nude models. It's perhaps the best training you will ever get and there is no tutorial that can teach figure drawing in 24 days, trust me on that I've been looking and haven't still found any.
Practice practice practice and practice a little bit more, get disgusted with drawing, take a break, play Dead or ALive 3 or any other game and when you feel up to it again go practice again. It's a harsh world but perseverence is better than giving up. _________________ ... and they shall know no fear. |

It seems as though you believe there are a few simply explained tricks that someone could tell you, and you'd improve dramatically overnight. I hate to be the one to give you the bad news, but no such magic bullets exist. As you are probably starting to suspect from the responses on your thread, lots of drawing from tutorials, books and especially from life, is the only way to get better.
Post some of your work, ask for crits and comments and then go and draw some more. That's how you'll get better. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

First off i realize that their are no magical tricks to know how to draw overnite! Im willing to practice but i feel that there has to be a way of going about FIgure Drawing!!! I have read Loomis and found it some what diff. to understand but i have used the examples in hiw book to produce some pictures of my own! I know that all artist have there own style or way of doing things to reach their desired goal; or artwork all that i was asking was if you as talented artist could tell me how YOU figure draw such as....
1. block
2. sketch
3.muscles
ECT
Im not expecting to be the best figure Artist in the world but i would just like if others would share with me how they go about it!! Thanks for the ideas....as i will post some of my figure drawings once i get a WEBPAGE set up...THANKS AGAIN

Head on down to your local book store and get Drawing the Head and Figure by Jack Hamm. The Loomis book is really a great book but it can be a bit confusing if your like me and dont really wanna read all his essays... . I really recommend that Jack Hamm book as a great starter.
I think that might be more like what you're looking for.
He covers blocking in basic shapes, basic form, muscle structure, right into the details of the body, and does it kinda step by step. One of my most cherished books..... right next to the Art of Star Wars ep. II *hugs his books again*
and no need to get worked up. all this is kinda just a big miscommunication. dont sweat it. ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

If you want to go to school and you need a portfolio then just draw and do as much art work as you can even if you think your work is crap. Even the best artists just throw things together and some of their best work might have just been made just for fun.
Even crap can look good to some people.
But as I say, Create something or you will have nothing.

Don't listen to anyone here Shiintokaze.
There is that great figure drawing secret that is passed from artist to artist, but only if you are loud enough shall you receive it. So asking spooge or fred is exactly the way everyone should go about it. Maybe you should try it with BIG RED LETTERS for maximum effect. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |

Go down to a local park, sit in the food court at your local mall, or anywhere there's lots of people around... Sit down and start drawing what you see. If folks are moving too quick for you, whip out a camera and start snappin off shots of people. Take your sketches or ref pics home and try to expand on them in a more elaborate/detailed fashion.
Also, make sure to check out anything you can get your hands on by Andrew Loomis.

Uh... I've got to interject here....
DON'T learn to draw people from photographs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I REPEAT- DON'T LEARN TO DRAW PEOPLE FROM PHOTOGRAPHS!!!!!!!!!!
Every damn thing you do will look like a comic book character.
Go down to your local college/community college/any community arts center and see who has either open model sessions or noncredit figure drawing classes.
Concern yourself with the basic principles of form. Learn to see the figure in negative space and common angles. If you've never drawn the figure before, start with the linear form first, then worry about light and shadow when you have your linears down.
DON'T go from "Burne Hogarth's Ridiculously Contrived and Mutated Anatomy" books. Draw your hand. Do countless self portraits. Draw your brother/father/mother/sister/(girlfriend?)
Oh yeah, what are you doing applying to art school with what sounds like little or no drawing experience? Don't set yourself up for dissapointment. Go take a few intro to drawing/Drawing 101 classes at your local community college. Apply in a year or two when you actually have practical experience. |

Personally I think drawing from photos is a great way to learn.
First of all, the model doesnt get tired and you can take your time. (If you feel like getting pressured, you can use a slideshow function on a bunch of pictures and do quick sketches.)
Secondly, it's not so much WHAT you draw from, as in HOW you do it. Copying a live model, like you're a slave to what you see, wont get you very far. You need to analyse and see forms and shapes. It may sound abstract, but you have to learn to filter and feel what you draw. That way you will be able to do so even without a model.
As for learning anatomy, the best method I've found is very simple: After you've drawn a picture of a nude person, go over it again with an anatomy book and put in all the bones and then muscles. You'll learn anatomy in no time.
Getting REALISTIC anatomy: you can always do that later by way of observation - once you know where the muscles are and how they work.
That's really the least of your worries at this point ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

You could try using Poser 4 as a figure reference for poses and lighting if your computer savvy. However this should not be your only refrence. It's good if you need a pose and cannot find a good photo for it. Also it comes in handy to figure out lighting. |

Hey Shiintokaze, u can't learn to swim if u don't go down in the water. Know what i mean?
Take Malachi Maloney's advice and go out there and draw. Then start buying books, from local bookshops and the net. Then draw some more.
scan all that and throw them in this forum .... u'll then start getting feedback an hepl.
Good luck.
......
what?!!! you're still here?! ....GO OUT THERE MAN !!!!!
