Ok I'm a real newbie at drawing. ><;; Soooo pls don't kill me if this is the wrong place to post this.

I decided to try this tutorial a couple of days ago but ughhh... I just can't get it right!

This was what it originally turned out to be like at first. However, I made a mistake and drew the face too small(turned out thumbnail size) so I couldn't correct the details properly. :/

This is the 2nd attempt. But still stuck with the nose. ><;; And I kept re-drawing till she became this.

Now, I'm stuck with this but although pple have suggested that I look at pix of pple's noses and lips, I still cannot draw them too well. I know how to draw them pretty okay but I don't know how to adjust them to fit the face. ><;;

So, does anyone have any constructive comments to make, other than asking me to keep practising or take up art classes or telling me that I or my drawings suck?

Well I looked at the tutorial but didn't want to read it cuz i'm tired and lazy right now
It seems like it doesn't have a lot of step by step instruction with visual though...
You drawings don't suck :p
However just looking at them... in sigh4.jpg the nose is too big and the mouth is too small. The eyes are too far apart. and the eyebrows are too far up or not thick enough. :p

Actually I learn more in these forums and the internet than anywhere else

Read a lot here. If you are willing to invest some money I'd buy "Drawing On The Right Side Of The Brain" by Betty Edwards.

You should look more carefully and copy more accurately. If you want to come up with faces from your mind (and maybe whole figures without ref later) you should learn anatomy as well.
Then you should know more about the proportions ... as Xyster21 said.

I have that book but it didn't improve my drawing.

It instead, made my drawing experience much much more fustrating. ><;;

I could understand the book but when I tried following the exercises, it didn't even work out at all. What I got was a huge mess... 'cos I'm not good at drawing upside-down. However, I'm better when I hold my drawing against the mirror to observe it. And also, during the time when I did the exercises, my drawing didn't improve at all. :/

I guess it works for different people. :/

Hehe I know you don't want to hear this but I think maybe you need 1 on 1 help. Maybe you have a friend that can help you out with it that knows how to draw maybe? Or get into an art class (teachers usually don't do well with that one on one help like they should). There are plenty of experienced students to help out in art classes. Even with just the teacher you will learn alot more than you are I suppose reading out of a book like you said, it helps some more than others . I have that book too but I just skip around through it from time to time... even after I read it all completely once doing everything step by step... I still take a looksee back and do things over again because you will only get better the more you do it. You can't just do it once and expect to improve dramatically. And no ones drawings will every be 'perfect', theres always room for improvement.

Eh, maybe I could if I had the time but too bad, I'm studying for some other course right now. And by the time it ends, would be about 1 and a half to 2 years later. ^^;; I'm currently studying a BA diploma and will be doing my degree when I complete it. Although that was a family decision, not a personal choice. *shrugs*

So, there u go... that's why I can't sign up for art courses. Besides they are damn expensive here(a few hundred US dollars just for the basics, ranging into a few US thousand dollars for the more advanced stuff), most of them have an age limit(as in... basic classes are for kids, no classes for adults), and many that accept adults require u to be able to draw REALLY good before u even sign up for one like being able to draw still life and life potraits. ><;;

That plus nude-drawing is a very very very touchy matter here in Singapore. One of my mom's colleagues nearly lost his job 'cos of that.

Oh and I guess I failed to mention this:

I don't get a mental image when I draw.

When I want to draw, all I do is grab a pencil and a piece of paper and my brain commands me to draw. ^^;;

Therefore, I have no idea how to "call up" a mental image when drawing. Although if u were to ask me to look at a pix and call up a mental image of it, perhaps I could. :p

If you have ever in your life had a dream (like an asleep dream), you CAN have a mental image of what you want... it is hard but if you do it alot you can picture many things in your mind... however for me (and probably others), my best ideas AND drawings/paintings come late at night when I am half awake (thats probably why) and have to get sleep for work and school the next day.

well don't stop drawing. Just keep at it. Doodle whenever you get a chance to. I used to do it in high school during math class :p hence the poor grades for that class (just too dull and boring for my likings) and I did it whenever else I had time to do it... I even do it at work still *shh*

Yuri, thats not to bad really! For being a newbie I mean, I was not much better when I started a year ago, what I would suggest is that you pick up a book called "drawing with the right side of the brain" (or something similear). It`s a great book, maybe a bit to technical at times but it has some exercises that teaches you to not be to _focused during your drawing sessions, it seems to me that instead of drawing what you see your drawing what you _think_ it looks like!

Find a model, a picture reference or something like that, sit down and look at it.. and think in pure lines, pick out lines and curves and try drawing them just as lines and curves and do not think about the part your drawing, if you picture the eyes or the nose as just another shape consisting of lines and curves it`s easier =) It has helped me alot.

And, it`s just to keep practicing!! Here`s some of my drawings that shows my steady improvement.

This first one I draw a year ago, in my early newbie stages (which I`m still inn btw =) )


The following two is drawn 3-5 months later








There are alot of errors with all of those drawings, but they have helped me a lot understanding drawing, anotomy and that practice is essentiall! Sorry for the heavy-image post but I just needed to make a point there

Yikes! That's my tutorial you were working on there, Yuri! (I happen to be a member of this board.) I think you are off to a good start, but of course other books and resources are always recommended. Also note that my step-by-step tutorial was not really meant to be a "stand alone" tutorial; my site has a lot of stuff and I have taken pains to include tutorials on how to draw the features, proportions, etc. etc. But I get tired sometimes, OK? There's a lot of work to be done on such a site. Whew!

Keep on drawing, you will be fine.

I think that lips and noses are harder to draw becuase you trying to out line them. Out line the eyes works much better cos if you actually look at someone there is more of a dark outline around them. lips and noses aren't the same. You can't outline them to easily. Easier to describe by shading, for instnace the top lip might be dark becuase it is sort of angeld down (if light comes from above) and then there would b a shadow below the bottom lip.. etc. Yeah, it's especially hard not only to draw noses and mouths with out lines but even harder with a complete joined up loop you know? you can leave gaps in the lines remeber.
