I've been playing with it for a while now and it seems pretty good. Is it worth getting for someone who can't afford Photoshop yet? How is it for hi-rez work?

I think it's a great little program. Though it's not nearly as overwhelmingly versatile as Painter, it produces great results. I've seen some really wonderful paintings come out of OpenCanvas.

Hi! IMHO, I believe that Opencanvas is a great program that can produce some exceptional results, perhaps even more easily than with Photoshop. I've tried both and the brush control on OC is, at least I think, much more painterly and suited for digital paintings than adobe. If you're looking to make paintings and blend colors and stuff, it's the program for you I'd say, but if you're looking for more clean brush work, to do graphic designs or to make smoother paintings I'd go with adobe. It's hard to say which is better, it really depends on what's being done. OC took some getting used to for me (but that's just me), but once I got it, it works great if I just wanna sit down and paint something.
I tend to associate OC with the more painterly but harder to control pictures, and PS with the more sterile, easily controlled pictures. But I guess it really depends on how you paint in the first place.
Back to your question--I am glad I bought it, so I would say it is worth it. These are just my opinions though. ^^ If you like the trial version available at portalgraphics.net , you will likely find the real thing just as good or better.

I am very impressed by this program that only costs $50

Its definitely worth it, too bad there are no US distributors as I'm kinda leary about sending my credit card info to Japan, but I guess its no different than ordering performance parts for my car.
