I had a little argument over at the other board.
I posted my website and local moderator said it sucked ass and that his own was way better. So I ask you all people to pick the best site.
these are the two sites:
site 1
site 2
pick one plz |

Tough. I don't like either one of 'em. But at least I can read the font in the first site. And I can't cover it with my thumb
But don't listen to me ... baaad mood!

The first one has annoying animations, but the other one is completely unreadable and hard to navigate. So I prefer #1.

Yep - I'm with Martin on this:
The first site and the "fly ins" is just going too far - it's cheezarama; that's the kind of stuff that secretaries (er - administrative assitants) and engineers do using Powerpoint - bleh. I would loose it altogether; removing the jscript will streamline your html base too.
Now the best thing about Site 1 is the well established, visible global navset. It's visible on every page (all those I visited), and that's a good thing.
Site 2
ow. All that space wasted. No labeled navigation and what's there is way too small anyway. From the standpoint of user experience it's doomed to fall down.
Don't take it personally!! Remember you asked!

the second site is mine. i have the skills to make the site larger.
it is so small to fit 640 res. i might enlarge it up to 800 then i will label buttons and make the text clearer.
i value your input, just tell me where you live and leave the backdoor open tonight (hehe) |

What does 800x600 resolution have to do with anything? As far as I can tell, your site is just over 300 pixels wide, so you could make it almost double as wide and still stay inside 640 pixels. But the biggest problem is the dark text color.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be obnoxious. I just thought it was a weird thing to write. To say something positive, I like the look of the metal bars.

Yeah - I'll be sure to make sure the hounds are loose too.
About the second design: Remember that the navset is the key; it's the single most important point of entry for users to garnish content - it has to have visual precedence. Bring it to the user - don't make the user have to come to it. _________________ - Tom Carter

The first one has unnecessary animation on buttons which doesn't go away.... so you have to wait for them each time they display. It's annoying the first time and motivation to quit the site when they come up again...
The second on was unreadable.... I always wonder at site designers who put dark text on dark backgrounds... not fundamentally clear communication. _________________ HonePie.com

Comments given in the spirit of support and encouragement, and to be taken as you see fit:
Love the dark tealish green background.
Neat little hinged thingy as your center of focus and interface.
Clever using the hinges for links (I wonder how many visitors will find them? Personally, the hunt was fun, but I'm not sure how many others will want to bother.)
Text looks like someone placed a dirty film over it. The only way I could read it was to drag my cursor over the type to highlight it. That's a must fix, as others have said.
Link text:
"Information" is fine.
"Attempts and Failures" needs to be changed. It's a needless self-put down and a terribly boring habit young male artists indulge in (or peer pressure "requires" it of them?). Whether or not you've built confidence yet, no one wants to carry your burdens of self doubt for you, least of all a visitor to your site. In addition, it makes the person putting themselves down look immature.
Try "Experiments" instead. The best artists do experiments and it's part of the process of discovery and improving skills.
Good for you, for bringing the question of your site to a forum and asking for opinions. That takes courage and a good deal of maturity. It's going to be a nice site, methinks.
P.S. I didn't bother with the other site. Thanks to everyone for warning me. |
