This one is from an island on south of China. The island call Hai Nan. I like to start with this coustume because my father have this trail blood. Whitch mean I have that too.

This trail call Li. They live around at Hai Nan and Guang Dong. They have very good skill of weave. The fablic have geometry pattern. Most of them doing fishing for living. They do creat their own language and written language base on Latin.

I don't have this information yet. Only offer image for this one.I will keep research to find out where this come from?

it's a very good idea (and so well executed). I'm extremely curious about everything especially with traditions in these times of mainstream globalisation. Thank you for sharing a tiny glimpse of that part of the world Smile
I'm looking forward to see more because those outfit -especially the first one- are very interesting.

Stunning. I'm looking forward to seeing more.
I guess not many others will contribute though. I wouldn't know what to paint. There are no traditional costumes here that I like. And I guess modern Halloween or Carnival costumes don't really fit here.

hi ChiaNi, since this is definetely a costume thread and did not specify that digital medium is required, so I dug into my college portfolio for a similar theme and presto, I have one of the traditional costumes of the native people of Sarawak (or Sabah?), in Malaysia! Yup, if you guys didn't know yet, I'm from Malaysia.

The Iban people are among the many natives of Malaysia. Their costumes are very rich in warm yellowish colour and usually accompanied with traditional equipments not illustrated here, usually something like a wooden decorative shield and a specific 'weapon' not made for fighting, but more for ritual and dance.

Oh yes, the actual Iban people wouldn't be wearing those slippers and high heeled shoes Laughing .... I actually painted that out of the modern fashion article. Its done with designer gouache on illustration board.

Hi ChiaNi, I feel so honoured to have someone like you to actually go through pile upon pile of artworks in my messy website to find the particular one that I intended to show here! Thanks for your compliments on my website although my designer friends critique it as being very 'boxy' or 'squarish'.

I think I'm gonna post more for this thread (with digital works) because Malaysia is rich with culture and diversity, so that gives me alot of materials to present here! So please wait for me to post them! Smile

ChiaNi, the traditional outlook of this topic is really a stark contrast with the other topics way too associated with fantasy and sci fi themes... Its a refreshing change. Let's preserve tradition the digital way! Very Happy

*ps.. but first I have to handle one major problem first.. which is obvious.. my image hosting!! I have two... and sometimes one works and the other don't and vice versa! sometimes both of them don't work... showing me those nasty red Xs, which really drives me nutters!!

hey jeromoo, thought I should help you out.

Geocities doesnt allow picture linking, that is why your picture wont show.
Cant help you with any tips of webproviders thou, I have had problems with some webproviders and I think in the future you wont be able to link pictures unless you have your own domain. You can link to pages, so an image can be on a html page and then you link that page here.

I have got myself a domain now and are working on setting up some things for it. Smile

have a nice day
cheers
Matthew

I've fixed my image hosting!! Now my image can show.. YAY!

Thank you ChiaNi for posting for me, but I can now make it available to you guys!!

Matthew.. I didn't use geocities.. I also didn't use web1000 as AndyT have suggested, but I found another way, that is by using the circle99 community site. Uploading your images there allows you to link the images here! Besides, its free too... with the limitation of 5mb which is reasonable!
A really good news for folks hunting for a good image hosting!

Now, I have a peace of mind and so I can start on the costume thing! Very Happy

Hi ChiaNi, I'm here to back you up... sorry I took so long to post my contribution because my eyes have problem and need to take break from using computer....

Okay, here's my contribution... the 'models' are actually my imaginary 'mannequins' for displaying the costumes and sorry about the background cuz I'm in a rush to post this...

okay here is the description about the costumes as mentioned in an article...(written by Emma Bishop)

Baju Kurung and Baju Melayu:-

Baju Kurung (worn by the woman)- Strongly dictated by the Islamic dress code, the traditional Malay costume is both modest and conservative without being boring or colourless. Malay women are extremely adept at injecting colour and flair into a dress that truly reflects their warm character. the Baju Kurung comprises a loose tunic with the top worn over a long skirt or sarung. In its original form, it is worn in all shades and colours with the shape and style remaining the same as it has many years ago. On Fridays, Muslim women wear it as a sign of respect for the holy day. It is even the preferred dress on that day by those who usually opt for modern attire.

Baju Melayu (worn by the man)- a loose shirt is worn over a sarung or a pair of trousers. To be more elaborate, kain samping' a piece of brocade(songket) is tied around the waist and trousers to match the shirt. To complete the ensemble, a headdress normally made of velvet called songkok is worn. For Friday prayers, the songkok has becoe an indispensable part of the Malay man's outfit.

Okay, I hope my contribution is educational enough for you all. Hope you will visit Malaysia one day!
