Well I almost diodn't bother to register at all, but then I thought sod it, don't let these bastard professionals intimidate you with their damned good work , so I decided to join anyway, I don't really have that much work I can post up at the moment, but here's a character I'm working on, a Dark Knight, it was about my 4th attempt at colouring with photoshop..and I was just looking for some comments and criticisms..so fire away
I hope it's not too big..o_O

I wrote that recently. It's the same here:

I think it would look cooler without the outlines. Define the shapes by value and add lines for definition in focal areas.
No black lines though! |
You should try a different approach for coloring. Don't use Dodge&Burn and the smudge tool. Color everything with brushes with different sizes and opacity.
Are the lines on a seperate layer? If they weren't there the image would fall apart. Try to get it to look consistent without lines.

The background bugs me most. I don't like the color. Maybe a gradient could help already!? |
And maybe add a shadow. You have to decide how he is lit.
Did you use reference? I'm not sure about the sword. I doubt he could hold it like that.

And you should think about lowering the filesize. |

man, andy u give THE best crits.
^what he said
the only crit left that i can think of is the bg. I dont particularly like using clouds, lens flares, or things like that. I think its a cruch. This image could be a lot cooler if he had an actual bg w/ scenery. U could even blur it out if uy dont want to spend too much time w/ it.
Heres a quickie to show u what im talkin about.

This is a pretty good start, but you should continue to push the value range to get more contrast and better establish the weight and volume of your forms. Right now everything looks very flat. Some darker shadows and some brighter highlights would add some depth and really bring this image to life.
Nice work! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Thanks for the comments and that everyone, it's appreciated.
You're definitely right about the background, I don't particularly like it either , I sort of got lazy, also I'm having trouble thinking of a good setting for him, wlel I have an idea but I think it's a bit too ambitious...maybe in time

Cheers, you're right it does look kind of flat..it's just that I'm always worried about making the darker and lighter bits contrast too much, so I usually end up with pictures that are really flat looking, but I'll try to work on that in future, thanks.

Thank you, hmmm Sauron's cool..but I was trying to be original, of course knights and that have been done so many times I guess there's nothing original about them anymore, oh well, as I said Sauron's cool if it has to look like someone it might as well be him , thanks for the welcome mate, hopefully I can learn off the people here and improve with time... |
