Hi all,
Haven't been able to post much lately, except the occasional speed pic (gotta love that thread) and some of the cool topic threads like the 'gansta' one (i like ta plug people).
So thought i might post a matte painting i did for a recent Honda TVC, which will be aired in the Australasian market. The director asked me to put "Gotham City" on the city bank, which of course was muzac to my ears! As always time was tight, but managed to get something useable in about 12 hours:
concept
final matte
I thought it might be of interest to illustrate how a matte painting needs to be broken up into seperate elements for compositing in Inferno. It was particuarly important here because everything else in the shot was filmed in timelapse, except for the Honda which moves in real time. The final comp shown here is just a temp test we did (and it's all been archived to tape now) but shows how the painting was corner-pinned to sit in the shot properly:

the final comp is not the actual final, the grading was darker, more gold and the light from the left was more subtle, intially dan had painted a much larger city much more gotham like but the clients wanted it cut down and decided they wanted it a little less dark. The heavy use of contrast fitted perfectly with the plate and final grade. It was pretty awesome watching him paint this matte and im pretty happy to say the least that he is my mentor
PS: Ill remind him to post the actual final comp when he can |

Beautiful work. Are the city lights pass and the water pass hand done as well? Really nice job... _________________ RJL |

Nice! Looks a little bit flat on the final comp, sort of paper thin a bit... but I wouldn't imagine thats a problem because its all moving fast through an ad.
Is the original plate Brisbane? Looks like the riverside expressway... |

Intous:
gbug: no problem. there seems to be alot of interest in the 'invisible art'. speaking of which, have you read the recent release " the legends of movie matte painting"? very, very inspiring and full of information!
frost: i think Kurtis (our assistant matte painter/designer/all round nice guy) answered that, but yes--i agree. this was just from a test comp to see how it would fit and if i had enough pixels (which i didn't and the compositor- to my horror -cloned some sky in the top right). but the director did want it very dark, so it was crunched down. thanks for the kind words!
cd: hmmm...not sure i'll be able to but i'll see if i can get a qt made just of the shot. will keep u posted.
krichmond: meet me in the stationary closet
duracel:glad you liked and no prob on the steps.
solarc: thanks. not a lot of time (speedpainting anybody?) but that's the world of tvc's: graphical problems that arise at the last minute!
Cos, hoodz, splitsoul: thanks so much!
ffs: ta mate. due to the quick turnaround, the city lights were just ripped from a suitable cityscape photo, and then graded, cc'd and placed in the appropriate spaces (thanks krichmond for that!). the water reflections weren't really needed and i just ripped some water from a photo and then graded it to match as a base, then painted in the detail.
mm, mrsmith:
bb: thanks. r u working hard..hmmm?
mk: you are very most welcome.
ijones:we apart from the lights coming on, we also added a fading light source and moving cloud which bought it back to life. great spot by the way, it most certainly is!
electro: your most welcome.
thanks all for the kind words and i'll post some more stuff soon! _________________ Thanks,
Dan
