Painter, Photoshop, and some scanned cord. (I twisted a bunch of embroidery floss together to make a rope. The woven chevron pattern part is altered from this pic.)

It looks very good but not real.
If you raise the contrast it will most probably look more real, just try it out, you will see.

Hey thanks for replying. Here it is after I played with levels a bit:

I think you are right.. the brighter highlights do help to make the dagger part look more crystaline.

Course... now the funky edge on the scanned cord shows up more. O_o

^getting better!
The next thing is this cort, it seems you did cut it out not very clean... you should use a tool in Photoshop to make the boarders/outlines soft, this way it will communicate with the BG best. (it is this drop tool, just zoom in the image and use it carefully)

Honestly i don't like the BG a lot, maybe because it reminds me of a eyecandy filter. I bet if you would take some good photo of wood or something it would look very realistic! Expecially when the BG is dark.
Maybe you can try to make some variations and then choos the best one, it is also good for practice.

To tell you the truth I think that thing that really makes it look false is the shadow on the fur. If it was really fur the shadow would be less uniform.
