welcome to photoshop ah, the blessed UNDO .
As to the images you posted- i think you should try starting out with colored canvas rather than a blank white one. right now there's too much of that white showing through and making it look flat and boring in tone.
The first sketch is interesting, but your coloring is too uniform- all around the place it's the same purple tone, and every part of the body has basically the same value. These veins are also too uniform and detailed- in many occasions, just hinting of detail will represent it better than actually showing it. I think that determining a lightsource and following it to shade the entire image consistently will make it look much better. The background was also better in the sketch imo, the shadow under the figure help planting it within the environment, simple as it may be .
If you haven't already, read FredFlickstone's (Ron Lemen) excellent tutorial threads which he recently posted here. It's a good idea to block in your forms with solid color, construct your basic planes with as few tones/values as possible, and move on to finish it only after you get it properly defined. |

hey hows it goin----don't worry bout the scorpions--i used to have the same addiction to dodge-n-burn tools....instead...use complimentary or analogous colors like i did in the left sphere and try to keep off the dodge-n-burn....i use the burn on occasion but i set it to "midtones" to eliminate the artificial effect.....
