hi guys..

I want to ask a question. But before doing that I think I need a little disclaimer Very Happy
Yeah problem is asking stoopid questions like mine on such boards implicts to be treated like a total idiot. So don't look on my postcount and don't think of me as a guy whos interested in art since 2 days because he has seen some kickass picture and is now coming to a board an starting a topic like "I'm a nnnnoooobbb".

Okay now my question. It's about Rules and Intuition.
Its was yesterday when I read Hogarth and he was explaining that the contraction in perspektive of every limb can be handeled by using circels(ellipses in perspective). So what I know now is the same as before. Because I don't know how to fucken construct a 100% correct circle in perspective Very Happy So I went to a german art irc-channel and asked (the story is getting long, i know Very Happy) And about 3 guys said "PFF, do it as you think and fuck them rules".
But when I look back to Hogarth again at first the circles don't look like done as someone thinks they more look like perfectly constructed. And a the second thing he wrote that for most artist drawing perspective is like a game of luck. "Hopefully I get it right".

My qestion now is, because I want to start excessive working, what is the best to do?
Just draw on like I ever did(just nonstop! and excessive) and hoping to get a feeling for perspective.
Or is it better to get to know Theory(nonstop with excessice practicing) and be perfect with everything. With knowing and have no doubt that the circle you do is 100% perfect etc.

What do you think?
And If you think number 2 is a good thing to do could you post some links where its explained how to construct a circle with a given radius from every angle in perpective?
err.. just post the links anyway Very Happy

thanks in advance

It's hard to vote for one or the other, because they are both at play when it comes to creating artwork. However, I'd tend to vote for 2 if the artist is still a student and 1 if the artist has years of experience and an established style.

hmm okay. good point.
So you think for me theory would be the first thing I should excessively do.
But I know a lot of kickass guys that almost never had a look at theorybooks n stuff... What you think bout that?

How credible are they? I don't know any selftaught kickass guys. Maybe I know their work but I don't know they are selftaught?

Just look at the good artists here. They all studied something like illustration or fine art. I guess these artists you're talking about are either lying or very specialized ... limited to a certain style ... Confused

You want to start excessive working? Learning the basics won't take forever. There are some rules artists should know before they break them.
It would be really ridiculous to decide not to learn the basics. But don't just read ... combine learning them with drawing.

http://www.drawthrough.com/tutorials/ellipses.html

You know the loomis books? www.fineart.sk/anat
You should probably read a lot there ... about perspective, composition and so on. Don't try to start with difficult subjects or with color theory.
I don't know a good order to learn stuff in though Confused

I often read just draw, draw, draw...
But I think that's bad advice ... how could the kickass artists all know everything about warm and cool shadows, line weight ... reflected light ...?

Well Philipp, I know where you're coming from. I'm a first year art student at OCAD and drawing has never really come that easy to me. The best and simplest I can offer you is to learn the rules in order to break them.
If you want to improve you need to practice and study a lot. The example of the elispse is a perfect one. Say if you were to spend hours practicing drawing the perfect elispse, after a while you'd be able to draw it without even thinking about it. Same thing with anatomy, light and shade or anything else for that matter. As eyewoo mentioned theory and intuition should go hand in hand, so study it up, but don't forget to keep drawing for fun Very Happy

I do... all the time. I wasn't like this in the beginningphase. But now I'm really happy with my feelings during drawing.

I think the mainreason why its like this now is because I don't draw when I'm sad or angry. And because I have a set of 10 warm grey marker pens Very Happy
These are very cool Smile

Okay.. thank you a lot. I know what I'm going to do next time.
And I'm sure It will be fun once I recognize my progress Very Happy
