Hello
This is an idea I have had for a while now and sometimes I have trouble with coming up with designs for shields and swords, so I thought we can tip eachother with this thread.
So feel free to contribute with all your swords and shields.

doesn't make any sense at all, considering what you want this thread to be, but there are swords and shields in this one!(to the right, if you can't see them!)
nevermind if that picture still doesn't make any sense to you. you'd need to attend the university i am going to and know the two persons involved. anyway. i don't have any swords and shields, but i haven't posted any images for a very long time, so don't mock this :P

No artistic value whatsoever in my pic. Just a concept for a sword I plan to have built in prague one day.

Hello,
Matthew, do you ever plan on making those swords in real life? Out of Carbon steel? Cuz...if so...I am sorry to say...but...those things...would never work. As for sword ideas...there are lots of limitations on how swords can be made and what other peices must be placed onto one. You are missing a pommel, which does not seem critical to the Japanese sword, but...to a European sword it balances the weight between the crossgaurd and blade. And as for tips on swords...something that would probably chip...
You should try searching around www.swordforum.com they are the real speacialists and they have bounds of information on actual swords.
But the shield...hehe...I am making something like that myself. But...mine will be a rectangular sharp, more of a Roman Pavise or Phalanx Lenticular. If I can find my cursed specs...I am also getting a custom blade made either by Juan Ortiz of www.tilaru.net or John Lundemo of www.odinblades.com
*goes off to search for drawings...buried underneath tons of pizza boxes* _________________ Pi R squared, no...Pi R round, cornbread R squared.

biochronox - Impressive sword design.
hey Wutaku
I didnt know that there was a Swordforum, that is cool.
I havent really thought of to making my swords in reality and I think you are right, they are short and kind of clumsy. I was mainly concentrating on the textures on both the shield and the swords, I am still experementing with the brushes in Photoshop. ...hmmm, Will see if I can make a better design with the next sword I will make.
I hope to see your Shield later. Thank you for the links
Cheers

I don't mean this as a putdown, but more as constructive critism, as you said your latest swoard "didn't became that great." meaning you don't have to post it. I was told this earlier also, and I noticed also that I can't be posting every little sh)t i make. Therefor, I'm just insisting out of the pictures you have, post the ones which stand out and really need to be shown. This isn't a gallery you know. _________________ girls like shining |

I dunno... somehow I dont like these totally overdecorated and overdone fantasy swords.. historical patterns are just more elegant. Some of the swords from odinswords.com look like the pimpmobile in comparison to "regular" stuff...
If I were to invest more money in useless items it would probably be something like this (actually it would be exactly this, except for a different hanger):
from Lutel , my favourite swordsmaker (and the best thing yet - the stuff he makes is suitable for stage fighting and reenactment!
For those really interested I can recommend "The Book of the Sword" by Wiliam Burton, which is a good introduction to the instruments people have used to "do unto others before they do unto you".
As for the designs here - I like your sword biochronox, although it does look somewhat impractical and conanesque (especially those pointy things on the crossbar).
Matthew - your swords look like theyre purely ornamental, try painting a figure holding one of these ungainly things... when playing with weapon designs I usually work my way up from functionality... look at some of the historical patterns, see what each is made for and then try and be creative... an interesting design does not mean huge blades or immense dragon wings for handguards, go for grace instead... a small detail on the blade, a decorated hilt or a wound ricasso... you dont need much. |

-Tilokani -
This must be the best I have heard from you. You are right about my posting amount and I have tried to tone it down, Im gonna work on it some more. In the case of this thread I am just interested in how other paint or designs swords and I think that I have been given many great tips in here.
-Hase-
Yep you are right. That is a great picture and thanks for the link to Lutel.
I have to check that book out, thanks again.

Simple is always the best bet for swords. The more decorations, the heavier it usually gets. Like...ornate hilts and pommels are usually cast of entire bronze or steel so they get the shape right. That usually makes the blade heavier if theres lots of designs. You must also consider, to make a functional sword, you have to make it taper down the length of the blade, and the blade itself. A Profile Taper which makes the sword come to a point, and a Distal Taper which makes the blade get thinner and thinner near the very tip from the bottom.
To Hase:
So, do you personally own a Lutel? I am thinking of picking up one of their warhammers, the 17011 to be more precise. I heard that their swords are a bit heavier then the traditional historic. But, I've seen their construction, very solid.
This is my ...Glamdring-ish sword design and LotR inspired peice I will be having smithed by Scott Swerder or John Lundemo. The stats are by far not right...cuz I am making a dummy wood one, just to see how it goes. Except for blade length and handle length will probably be the same. But...as to width, taper and all...I'll leave that up to those who are making the sword.

thats a cool design, looks "efficient". Im not sure about the leafed blade - it looks like it might get a little top-heavy (usually only bronze swords hat this typical shape). Nonetheless a very interesting design.
Ive seen (and used) several Lutel-made swords for stage fighting, Id say the one-handed swords are of average weight, the hand and a half swords are rather light in comparison to most others Ive seen. |
