After painting what I have here, I can easily notice that it doesn't look like cloth...at all. Looks very flat. I tried looking at my own shirt in the mirror, but it doesn't seem to have helped... If anyone can provide advice, or a link, or something, it would be much appreciated.
And yes, it is a spoof off of da Vinci. _________________ Self-pity and modesty get you nowhere |

Hello
I think that your cloth so far is really good. Dont know if you can find anything about Clothing Realism on this link but you can try it out, maybe you already now about the place.

Also, my old time favourite place on the planetquake, I think you can find some military clothing there anyway.

I think one of your bigger problems is that you are not thinking about the body under the cloth, it looks very flat, and this will be a big problem when trying to get realistic looking clothing, the cresses and folds in a cloth are not accidental there is a reason why it is folding a certain way. My best advice would be to paint from reference tell you get a good understanding of clothing in general (I should take my own advise hehe )
p.s. you should always avoid painting on a while background it will leave you highlights and shadows very off color when the piece is finished _________________ i have seen it all, i have done it all, i can't remember most of it? |

Thanks for the input guys. I'll go take a look at those links. I should have looked in the mirror longer anyway, I really only took a glance, so my reference was weak... and yeah, I've got to remember to keep away from the lack of background, whether it is a full background or just a color other than white, I need something- I'm off to work on it _________________ Self-pity and modesty get you nowhere |

Ok, I really want to finish this thing, but I'm stuck. I'm not concerned with anything besides the lower part of the tunic right now. I can't think of how the cloth would fall in this situation. I don't have a tunic myself, or anything that I think could look the same. I also can't find a good reference picture. Everytime I try to paint this part, it just looks so very wrong. The greatest thing would be if someone could do a very simple paintover just to show me the folds/highlights, but I can't demand that- I know everyone is doing their own work. I'd greatly appreciate any help, because I really want to finish this so I can get to work on some other stuff. http://zombiecrowinc.netfirms.com/comic.htm _________________ Self-pity and modesty get you nowhere |

i think your folds and cloth are pretty good really, better than others and looks like it follows the laws of gravity etc fine. maybe you are forgetting the overall light source. i.e. try adding another layer over it all where you darken edges and lighten others, just really loosely and large y'know, as if it was a solid thing like a cylinder etc...... thats not making sense is it....
n/m hope you understood that a little bit . oh and try adding more colours into it. like similar shades of greys, browns, greens, etc. a bit like skin is never just one colour with dark and light.
good job so far though.
oo oo just noticed, his arms relating the his sleeves. sleeves would be resting on his arms rather than 'hovering' above. _________________
