detail:

Here is another retouching job of late, created for a billboard, magazine and press campaign for World Wildlife Fund.

The art director, Carl Van Wijk, wanted the leaves of the tree to portray the panda from the WWF Logo in a way that was visible, but not over-obvious (in the final applications the WWF logo in the bottom corner of the ads will help the viewer grasp the concept)

It was a hell of a challenge as I had to retouch the trees on a leaf-by-leaf level to ensure that the image would hold together realistically, even at billboard size - at times the working size of the images came in around 2GB.

Here is the original shot supplied for the job - the only shot WWF had available of the particular species of gum that had enough detail and clarity to be usable:

It was a challenge but that's what keeps my work fun. Both the client and art director were ecstatic with the result.

Oh, also please note that my email address and website url have changed recently, so you can keep your bookmarks and addresses up to date. I've recently made the move to full time freelance work, so have made some changes to more reliable, professional services.

wooow!! insane!
First I looked at the first pic
and my first thought was:
wuuuh what a detailed painting, nice color, very nice colors, uh I like that one..
wait a sec, thats a photo.
than my brained said my eyes: "go to the pic below to make it clear" moved to the next pic,
my second thought: aahhhh, yup it's a photo, how he got this superb colors?...hmm don't know, somehow collaged and hued it, perhaps ?
than I read the text
and after that I couldn't get rid of the panther in this pic, he's always there, starring at me....aaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
-sorry

Thanks all, I'm glad you like it.
(I'm always hesitant about posting photographic retouching on an illustration-based forum - I'm always expecting some fool to flame me because he thinks I'm trying to take credit for completely illustrating it from scratch)

gLitterbug: The original tranny scan came in at 3,000 x 2,500 pixels and the filnal image size created is 16,000 x 6,000. With the multitude of layers in the working version the file became massive and there would have been no advantage to working at a higher resolution, even for billboard reproduction.

This was one of the last jobs I worked on for Young & Rubicam Advertising before leaving them new years eve - hopefully I'll still get the chance to work on such interesting projects now that I'm ronin.
