Hello, back again with a few more images, this time, more traditional in their approach...
the Lord of the Rings piece is in guoache and actually is not finished yet.
The other image is in oil from life, and are considered speed paintings. Each was done in 10 or 20 minutes. These are from an oil painting quick sketch class I teach at our school, the Watts Atelier.
ANyway, comment away if you wish...
Thanks....Fred

The drapery on Legolas is tight. I remember the heads from the last Watts brochure too. Great stuff. _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |

good thought on that Jaeger, as I mentioned I am nt finished with it, and the head still has a way to go, but I would probably not have looked at it that way. Thank you I will definitely do wome touch up there. But in the meantime, I think it is finished enough to view it. Otherwise, it would end up like so many of my other images, in a stck of unfinished paintings...thanks for the tip again... |

Fred!
These are great. I love the LOTR one. I wish the movie had those colors. The oil sketches are very inspiring. I haven't been doing much traditional art lately, but these make me want to try painting some heads.
Anyway, it's great to see you back here. Moze and I are now in L.A., so whenever you're in the area... |

Hi Fred, it's good to see you back here.
Are these works done on paper or canvas? If they were done on paper, how do you avoid warping the paper? Or is it a special type of paper designed for gouache?
Also, how long would it take you to complete an image such as the legolas one?
I would really appreciate it if you could answer my questions. Oh and like always your images are fantastic! Hope you stick around ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ www.jasonink.net/journal |

jasonN-the LotR image was done on illustration board, teh other was done on canvas. The legolas image took around 4-6 hours to work on, not all at once. It was done over a three day period, because of time crunch from work and work and such. The faces in oil were twenty minutes each, or ten minutes with a couple of them...thanks for asking.
Malachi, thanks, I think I will be a round a while...
Magicpen, anthony, thank you both also, and I wont be going. In fact, I have more to share. Including some of my notes from some amazing artists, I want everyone to have. I just have to scan it all, and post it...
Cant wait to get back into the swing of things. Thanks again for the crits, compliments etc. I feel at home again...![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

Max-thank you
Matthew-guaoche is a watercolor, but one that can be worked with. THat is, with watercolor, the water influnces the color tones, and it is hard to go back in that color, once dry, and do anything with it. guaoche on the other hand, this painting for example, I could go back to in 20 years, and soften up what I have painted into it. It will reactivate with water. Kinda dangerous if you work in a rainy wet environment and have to transport the art around, or if you live in a tropical region. The moisture will always mess with the paints a bit. _________________ RJL |

The colors on that gouache are wonderful, and those speed oils look great.
About the Legolas pic, though. His face seems a little wide for Orlando Bloom, who has a slimmer face, and as mentioned, he seems a little old in the gouache. Also, The legs seem a little short, although it could be my eyes playing tricks on me, and his front foot seems a little uncomfortably positioned. But the colors, as mentioned, are gorgeous.
(I feel like an ass for criticizing Ron's work, especially at my level, but I hope it was constructive. ) |
