Hello all, I have been away for some time now. I have had too many things going on that takes me away from doing what I love, sitting, painting, and chatting with other artists about art. I hope I can again do this soon, in the meantime, I dont want to totally dissappear from memory...hehe

anyway, this is a digital painting from life. It was a two hour painting of the guy who owns our art school, demonstrating guoache painting to our class, which is bigger than the five of us, but these were the only chaps that would stay seated the entire time.

No line art, no photo. I set this up like easel painting and went at it. I wish I had more time to put in more people, but, this was my first attempt at this, and it was quite an experience.

Comments, crits, rip me a new one...thanks for viewing, and see ya around...

Fred Flick Stone

I like. I like a lot. The lay out, the absence of drama, the well balanced colours. A quiet painting for a quiet moment..The guy in the green is maybe too big an eye catcher, white faced and all but, well, it just tells a story of its own... more :) !

Welcome back Fred/Ron! Looks good - values are mostly on target with a little mud around the edges, but I attribute this to the "let's try this brush" temptation. :] Good to have ya back!

PS: Did that guy on the left really have a face like that?! Cool

Yo, welcome back fred!

Did you lose your old "fredflickstone" nick?

Awesome painting. Always liked the way you capture the expression on the faces in your pics.

That's really great! And it really doesn't look digital.
I just know some of the posts in the Archive. I often thought what a pitty that there's not more to see @ the homepage.
Now I see that new HP under construction Shocked !
That really just rules!

hello...wow, familiar faces. This is cool. Spooge included. Well, the guy in the back did have that face, he wears it every day. He is actually, if you remember, Tenman from old Sijun days. The rest of em are our heavy hitters in the school...

This was really fun to do. I have been nervous about doing something like this for a while now because there is so much angst from traaditional artists about the digital arts, and our school was no exception. Nice thing is most of them are warming up to it, I have been doing digital demonstrations now in class, and it opens up the potential for solving problems quickly and get to the heart of the drawing.

We get so side tracked on how to draw the image, we get a bit funked in the painting phase because we find the drawing incorrect. The digital medium now I have been working with, and I can sketch or do paintings, whatever it takes to get an idea to come forth. The Wacom is such a beautiful tool, not to mention the power of the laptop now. The one I use is a Toshiba s703, it is really fast, and the wacom that I have hooked up to it is one of those little 4 x 6 Wacom Intuos 2's, a small flat bed Lido Canon scanner, and a wand printer, and the home art studio has now gone mobile. I can do what I need to do anywhere, and I like it like that. The Soltek portable easel, a bag of paints, a box of canvas boards, the laptop and a digital camera for texture and instant reference, the artist no longer needs to stay in one place. Got internet connect? Dont need books for reference anymore. Its so damn cool. Now I can go live in Hawaii and draw and...sounds familiar...hmmm...

ANyway

AndyT, thank you, I hope to get that damn site up soon. I have been really anal about the home page, I cant get past that yet...stupid eh?

Synj, nice animation, the finish is epic...get my game done, go back to work dammit:)

Ceenda-yeah, I dont remember how to log in as old fred, so I got the studdering brother to replace him...thanks

Francis-thank you sir, I hope to draw like a pro some day, just like my favorite artist god Thomas Kincade...dreamy:)

Spooge-glad to hear from you again too...like I said, it took a lot of nerve for me to go do this. Now I am hooked. One of these weeks I am going to do a painting in the figure drawing class...I have another life painting I will post soon from night. I love the night lighting, and now I can paint it hastle free...I love the laptop...

Sumaleth/ANthony-Thank you both, the guy in the back wears that face all the time...grouchy old man...heheh

Andromeda[*]/Hoodz/ChiaNi/eyewoo thank you ...

Dr Monkey-what do you mean by muddy in this case? Just curious...I did it rough to break the digital look, I used less ambiguous edges away from the faces to draw more attention to the faces, plus, I only had two hours to paint this, get the drawing right, get the proportions of each guy to each other right, get the colors right, get the paint down, deal with moving figures, um..what did I foget...oh well...life painting is not easy, and I tackle rediculous subject matter in the time frame I had, if I were faster, I am sure some of the edges would have been better clarified...

SoMK-I agree, the green is too much. I will try toning it down, but I like the painting as is, I try to keep moments like this untouched beyond that moment to remember, and reflect upon the mistakes made, the good things acheived, etc. Thank you for the kind words...

off to work...thanks again...good to be back in a familiar place, with friends and fellow artists...

Dr. Monkey-not to worry, I love answering the challenging questions, they help me figure things out more thorough than I would normally, so I can give a more defined answered. I dont get offended by good comments and questions at all, in fact I thrive on them. Thanks for asking again.Smile

Ron: I'm keeping busy. We shipped X-Men 3 last fall and we've got 3 pretty cool projects in production right now. Meanwhile I've been training with Ryan and Andrew at CAI. Jeremy just had his one man show in NYC btw. http://www.arcadiafinearts.com/exhibitions_lipking.html

Send me an e-mail or I'll send you one. I'm dying to get some details on how your training with Capella is going.
