Sometimes, a certain scene, imagery, dialogue, or sequence from a film takes my breath away. I'm sure it happens to all of you. Let's share.
Here are my unforgetable moments in film:
Titus- Lavinia was found in the woods, her hands chopped off and replaced by tree branches, and her tongue cut out. When she was asked who had done this horrible crime to her, she opened her mouth and blood flowed out in slow motion, carried away by the wind. The most beautiful imagery I’ve ever seen captured on film.
Platoon- As Charlie Sheen watched in horror circling above in a chopper, William Dafoe was being chased and gunned down by the Vietcons. The most powerful death of a hero.
Goodfellas- When Ray Liotta started speaking to the camera during the final scene of the film. Extremely effective.
Sunrise- As the husband watched a couple getting married and speaking the marriage vows, he broke down and cried in the church, feeling ashamed and guilty for trying to kill his wife. I cried like a baby.
Waking the Dead- In a scene that was deleted (DVD special feature), Jennifer Connelly took Billy Crudup home to meet her family. That night, they slept in separate rooms. She left him a note on her bed that read, “Wake me and fuck me.” As he climbed into her bed in the middle of the night and kissed up her leg towards her thigh, she murmured, “Daddy?” He froze for a second, and they both started laughing uncontrollably. Very cute.
Casablanca- When Bergman said to Bogart, “You have to think for all of us.” What a classic.
La Femme Nikita- When Nikita had to assassinate a target while pretending to be taking a bath, and her boyfriend was going ape-shit outside. Intense.
Usual Suspects- When Redfoot(Peter Greene) flicks a cigarette in Stephen Baldwin's eye. That’s got to be the coolest, most manly gesture I’ve ever seen. I need to practice my aim so that next time someone pisses me off, I can flick a cigarette in his eye.
Romeo and Juliet- When Decaprio and Danes first see each other through the aquarium. How adorable.
Conan the Barbarian- When Conan’s mother gets her head chopped off, and little Conan looks at the hand she was holding just a second ago, then looks at James Earl Jones with confusion and disbelief. The moment that defined a man’s life.
American Beauty- There are two great moments: 1)When Wes Bentley was telling Thora Birch about how there’s so much beauty in this world, and she reached over and held his hand. 2)When Wes Bentley and Thora Birch found Kevin Spacey’s dead body, and as Bentley looked at Spacey’s dead but smiling face, he smiled back at him, knowing he died in a moment of true happiness.
Red/Trois couleurs: Rouge- When the judge saw the news report of the survivors rescued from the shipwreck, and we got to see all the main characters from all three films of the trilogy. A great sense of closure that ended the trilogy of three colors.
A moment of Romance- When Andy Lau and the girl were hiding in the bathroom, and the couple next door was doing the wild thing, and she got so embarrassed that she had to leave the room. Funny and cute.
Braveheart- When Robert the Bruce was telling his father how much it hurts him to betray Mel Gibson, and he would never do it again. Great portrayal of one man’s loyalty to and admiration of another man, while struggling with his own sense of right and wrong.
Clockwork Orange- When Malcolm McDowell was freaking out when he was wondering whether the old dude recognized him as one of the young man that raped his wife and attacked him. Only Kubrick could pull off such psychological intensity.
Heat- There’s two: 1)When Ashley Judd gives Val Kilmer the hand signal that it’s a “no go,” and you see the disappointment and hurt on his face. It’s especially powerful because the director made you think she was about to sell him out to the feds, but then you realize their loyalty to each other is much stronger than we imagined. 2) When Robert Di Niro spotted Al Pachino coming for him, and he takes one last look at the woman he loves and decides to leave her. The look of realization on her face was heartbreaking.
*Whew*
Your turn. |

Wow... you listed so many. I can't come up with that much, hahah.
Fight Club - When they are sitting in the conference room and the suit looks over to Norton and says, "I showed this to my man here. You liked it didn't ya?" (or something to that effect) and Norton bares his bloody teeth at him in this really weird way. Haha... I don't know why but I just love that part.
A Christmas Story - The Christmas Carols in the Chinese restaurant (fa rah rah rah rah, rah rah rah rah!) When they chopped off the head of the duck, making the mom scream, hehe.
The parts you mentioned in American Beauty.
Watership Down - Fiver's first "vision" where the field is covered with blood.
Watership Down - Officer Holly retelling the story of the human's destroying the burrow... ugh... that part always gets to me. So intense.
Blair Witch Project - (yes, I liked the film, so sue me.) Watching it in this tiny theatre before it has come out everywhere else, before it was hyped up, before I knew anything about it or what to expect. When everyone wasn't quite sure whether it was fake or not. All the parts where you could hear quiet rustling and whispering on all sides of you. Things in the distance... gah, that creeped me out. Scared my friend so much that she threw up at the end of the movie :P
Zoolander - "Blue Steel" hehehe.
It's A Wonderful Life - When George goes running down the street after his experience shouting "Merry Christmas" to everyone. |

Another:
Requiem for a Dream - When the mother starts to picture herself on tv.. it gets so chaotic, all the lights and glitter and insanity. Also, whenever she goes to the doctor's office and gets ignored (that part REALLY gets to me...) |

Saving Private Ryan - when the door on the landing craft opens and the first three rows of soldiers are instantly perforated by silent machine gun fire . . . that whole beach sequence was eerie as hell.
Godzilla 2000 - There's a shot towards the beginning that shows Godzilla running through a bay by moonlight, his tail just skimming the surface . . . its a beautiful shot.
Ghost in the Shell - The musical interlude where Kusanagi roams around the city . . . especially the shot of the airliner reflected in the highrise windows. The music is perfect for that sequence too.
Hannibal - the brain-feeding sequence . . . I've never heard as many people have a simultaneous audible response to a movie than I did seeing this in a packed theater in Utah. Guys were giggling, their dates were shreiking, it was great.
Dungeons and Dragons - the whole fucking this was just hilarious. MST3K-worthy. |

Ace Ventura 2: the fake rhino giving birth.
Ingmar Bergman's 'Virgin Spring': 1. the rape
2. when the parents discover that the men who raped and murdered their child are guests in their house.
Cinema Paradiso: the protagonist watching all those cuts edited out by the priest all those years ago, saved and taped together by his deceased friend and willed to him.
Sophie's Choice: the scene where she has to make her terrible choice.
City of Lost Children: hard to pick one...
Casino: when Joe Pesci gets it.
The Princess Bride: when Westley tricks Vizzini into poisoning himself. "Inconceivable!"
Hm, I could go on all day, must work now... |

Fear and Loathing-where everyone turns into

ya just took 3 hits of some acid.
Trainspotting-The scene with the dream.
where the baby's head spins around.
I can't watch it anymore.
Enter The Dragon-The fight scene at the end with Han.
I love that cheesy furry wood block with
steak knives coming out of it hand.
Joe Vs. The Volcano-The part where Joe
stands up on his trunk-raft and see's
the moon as huge as hell.
"I forgot.....how big"
i have a million more but, I gotta go...... |

The Fifth Element - The scene were Zorg (Gary Oldman :P) was demonstrating his weapon. "oldies but goodies"
Blade - The scene when Blade first shows up
Pitch Black - The scene were Vin Diesel pops his arms out of place so he could escape.
Army of Darkness - Just a fun movie to watch ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

This sort of thing is fun;
The Third Man; tie between the grin in the doorway and the ferris wheel scene
Odd Man Out; The end!
Psycho: The end! Those two films have the coolest endings, really.
187; when SLJ goes to wash off the wine stain and whatsername sees his scars finally and it all hits home.
Dao (the blade); the closing seige and subsequent fight scene. Un-friggin beleiveable.
Se7en; the split where we see the peepshow operator and "strap on guy" being interviewed side by side.
Yojimbo; where Sanjiro quits the fight and sits in the watch tower laughing at everyone.
The Manchurian Candidate; scene where 'the guy' kills his fiance
Full Metal Jacket; suddenly we cut to the lads wandering through a completely authentic, bombed out Hue. Holy shit.
Alien; the chest burtsing.
Romper Stomper; the big fight where car loads of Viet-namese dudes rock up half way through.
The blinking moment from La Jette
The phone call to the russian President in Dr Strangelove
The sand painting from Kundun
One of the moments before the big battle scenes in Ran
Where the maid gets lynched in Frankenstien (Kenneth Branagh's version; the rest was kinda annoying though). Intense.
I just love that shot where the streetlights come on in Do The Right Thing.
...err, that'll do for now. |

One just struck me: 'Misery', the hobble scene. [shudder]
(Though I couldn't believe it when I found out the book version is actually about 5 times worse... yikes.)
Hm, a few more while I'm at it:
Quentin Tarantino movies have lots of little moments like: when Robert DeNiro guns down Bridget Fonda in the parking lot for talking back to him one time too many...
Robert Rodriguez' Desperado: when Antonio Banderas punches out a bad guy without missing a beat on his guitar. No hero ever looked cooler...
Silent running: the ending, a real tear jerker.
Tremors 3: the opening scene, when Burt Gummer finally has the right tools for the job... no spoilers if you haven't seen it yet. (Highly recommended, but see the other 2 first.) |

Unbreakable-the part where Bruce is seeing the bad things people have done
when he touches them.
Fight Club-Where Edward Norton kicks his own ass and walks down the hall in a
bloody mess.
The Cell-When J-Lo walks through the hallway
with all of the girl-doll scenes.
and the part with the Horse.......insane.
Edward Scissorhands-THE WHOLE MOVIE |

None of mine are classics like the ones listed above, but I find them just as good.
The Limey: When the limey goes into the warehouse after getting his ass kicked and guns down 4 guys. He then walks out and says "Tell em I'm coming! Tell em I'm fuckin' coming!"
Traffic: The daughter in that movie did a very convincing job of looking like she was high/stoned. Yes I like Steven Soderbergh.
Raising Arizona: When Nick Cage goes running through the streets and through peoples' houses wearing the stocking on his head. Classic stuff.
Gone in 60 Seconds: When Angelina Jolie walks into the warehouse and says "Hello ladies." Something about that just gets me every single time.
Tombstone: Val Kilmer as Doc Holiday. His best role ever.
Hard Boiled: So many good scenes in this movie. A) When Tequila goes sliding down the banister at the beginning with both guns drawn. B) When Tequila goes running out of the hospital with the baby in his arms. The look on his face was priceless. |

The Cube - the whole movie is genious!
From Dusk till Down - The moment when the first time a vampire is shown. I was watching the movie on DVD with a friend and he didn't tell me that it'a vampire movie. I was shocked
Psycho - the scene with the classical *wheek wheek* sound.
Rosemarie's Baby - When Rosemarie finds the secret room.
Blair Witch Project - The scene where the girl tells a message for her parents into the camera.
There are much more, but I can't remember ![](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) |

Thought of another...
Swordfish: The opening scene was a masterpiece. Whoever thought that up is a genious.
12 Monkeys: That entire movie just messed me up. I walked out of the theatre and felt like my mind had been programmed or something.
JFK: Kevin Costner's explanation of the magic bullet in the courthouse. Powerful music made this scene so intense.

Yeah! Keep 'em coming!
It's RELLY interesting to see how we have seen a lot of the same movies, but we respond to different scenes, different characters, dialogues, and different images.
I think so far, only me and Jezebel liked the same scenes from a movie(American Beauty). |

This is always a fun one of course...yay, somebody mentiond Kundun! In addition to many mentioned, here's a few others...
Kundun - the entire film is a thing a immense beauty - but the building of the sand mandala and subsequent pouring into into the water are certainly beautiful - all of this blended with an perfectly-suited excellent Philip Glass score, man, this one film is at the top of my list of faves with;
The Thin Red Line - so many moments again, a beautiful film with another great blending of film and music, when the soldier reads about his wife wanting a divorce as she is lonely, that whole scene (and scenes about them throughout the movie) juxtaposing their past and the present and the soldiers reason for staying alive during the war to see his wife, now taken away. - Heartwrenching - the blue butterfly which passes by as the soldiers await in the grass, the buddha statue, the peaceful swimming of the local Malenesians, the buried face of the Japanese soldier, and of course the lone palm tree seed at the end signifying the circle of life and such...this is why this movie is on top of my list. A welcome surprise from Scorsese.
Baraka - Wow. too many to pick from. Another one that is just brilliant throughout the film.
Chronos - Some incredibly beautiful moments similar to those in Baraka.
King Kong - the whole Skull island experience is a wonderful adventure and a marvel on film for that time.
Gladiator - the brushing of his hands on the wheat, a simple motion that gave Maximus personality in the film, the snowy battle and arrival of the emperor, the falling snow and the mix of shiny and muddied soldiers and contrasted with the clean, yet trustworthy, honorable emperor among them paints a picture of loyalty, perserverance, and exhaustion. You can feel the conditions in that film. Another great painted canvas.
The Last of the Mohicans - Michael Mann makes 'em great! When the heroes are on their way up to rescue the women and the blonde woman throws herself over the cliff then stay with Wes Studi's character.
Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon - the Bamboo forest chase sequence, the water hopping shot
Superman - The truck is about to fall on Pa Kent and then we hear the faint Superman Theme and we see Little Clark holding the truck up.
Star Wars: A New Hope - Luke looking out over the crater at the twin suns of Tatooine
Braveheart - the disemboweling of William Wallace - I could feel the pain happening in that scene.
Bram Stoker's Dracula - The Count's shadow falls across the wall as he welcomes Jonathan Harker. The shadow parts are fun. 'the luckiest man on this earth, is the one that finds true love' scene...nice music, good lighting. Dracula's face coming out of the shadows at the bachelor greeting scene. He looks like the Emperor in Star Wars. When The Vampire Dracula confronts the hunters and then backs into the closet. The vamp scene on the bed. Lucy going out for a midnight walk. The end sequence. Okay, 'nuff said.
Unforgiven - the very opening scene. touching music, touching words, and touching imagery. touching. Plus it was filmed in my province so it's even more special!
The Seven Samurai - The Samurai looking up at those burial mounds.
Ran - seeing the red, blue, and yellow legions fighting and mixing together.
Aliens - another fave, but the moment where the Marines and crew seal themselves in a room but the motion detector is still going off like crazy and they all realize where the Aliens are coming in. Hicks gets up in the ceiling, turns around and BOOM! The critters are there! Very creepy and excellent tension building by Cameron.
Armageddon - cut-scene on the Criterion DVD showing the NASA guys at a table discussing the issue. The camera moves, the use of color in the scene and the way that the frame is filled with stuff is a nice work of art.
The Iron Giant - Hogarth showing the Giant comic books and getting to Superman. Also when The Giant Sacrifices himself and says 'Superman' is another fantastic moment.
Mission: Impossibe - 2 - Where the spanish dancing is going on and the subsequent car chase - the motion and editing combined with Lisa Gerrard and Hans Zimmer's music.
The Crow - Eric gets to see his wife a few times during the film. Nice segments. Movie truly is a romantic sort-of movie in the truest sense.
Legends of the Fall - also filmed here in Alberta so there's incredible scenery but the end scene which freezes on Tristan fighting the bear is great.
Field of Dreams - the ghost walking into the fields.
Pearl Harbor - Ben Affleck's charcter flying with the son in the plane at the end.
Face/Off - the moments where they are going after Castor Troy in the hangar and they pull out Pollux while he is being guarded. Pan over to Travolta and crew walking in. The setting up of protecting their trump card, Pollux, and making sure he is guarded is a smart moment in an action movie that rarely comes from most movies of that genre.
Edward Scissorhands - Pure Cinematic Magic. An excellent alternative fairy-tale and a great score to boot. Tim Burton's stuff is also some of my fave stuff.
The Third Man - Vienna Sewer Chase sequence
And a few TV moments for fun:
Miami Vice - great show...Michael Mann again, At the end of the Jai Alai episode where the brother of the dead player goes to shoot the woman and Crockett yells 'Franky!' and the video freezes on Crockett running with the echoing gunshot carrying on.
Magnum, p.i. - at the end of a two parter when Magnum asks the Russian guy if he saw the sun rise that morning, the Russian answers yes, Magnum thinks for a moment and then turns around and shoots him...freezing the video on Magnum's gunfire.
The X-Files - Mulder finds his sister's spirit while Moby's music plays - but I'm a big X-File fan so there's certainly a lot more. The end of Jose Chung's from Outer Space Episode when the couple is walking away and we hear the X-Files them very faintly. Nice.
Nash Bridges - when the two ex-partners from previous shows, Tommy Chong and Philip Michael Thomas appear together with Cheech Marin and Don Johnson and when we see Crockett and Tubbs reunitied so to speak, and we hear those first few drum beats from the Vice them. Sweet.

I agree with what's been said about American Beauty, Casablanca, Usual Suspects, Cinema Paradiso, City of Lost Children, Kundun, 2001: A Space Odissey, Baraka, Gladiator, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon (a great movie visually), Star Wars: A new Hope, Unforgiven and Ran.
Blade Runner: When the last Nexus 6 dies.
American History X: When he kills the black boy and when the brother gets killed. In general a great film about racism.
Ikiru: Hard to pick one...
Delikatessen: The same, many great moments. (This one is from the same director of City of Lost Children)
Vatel: When he speaks with Luis XIV's brother. I was shocked with what he says to Vatel, I really wasn't expecting that. Another great movie visually and from an artistic point of view.
That's all for now ![](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |

I thought of a couple more:
Hard Boiled - there's a gunfight sequence that takes place across several floors of a hospital . . . Chow Yun Fat is mowing down bad guys in classic John Woo fashion, for what must be at least five minutes . . . WITH NO CUTS. Its all one continuous shot . . . in and out of elevators, down hallways, et cetera, with near constant gunfire, and no edits.
UHF - When Stanley Spudowski (Michael Richards) leads the thugs on a chase around the channel 8 offices, shooting one of them with a staple gun . . . and then the guys from the karate class jump out of the supply closet and yell "SUPPLIES!!!!"
Robocop - When ED-209 malfunctions and blows the executive to bits . . . that scared the crap out me when I was a kid . . . not only is the robot completely badass-looking and armed to the teeth, but it has a serious programming error. Thanks for the nightmares Phil Tippet.
A Bug's Life - when the gang flies back to Ant Island to try and fend off the grasshoppers. Those shots showed me that I wasn't crazy for wanting to use 3D for environments instead of characters.
Mighty Joe Young - Not the Disney version, the original one from the 1940s. There's a sequence where Joe fights these lions in a nightclub that is just extremely well- executed considering when it was produced. |

batman returns: catwoman flic-flacs over to batman and the penguin, meows and behind her, the shop explodes. rowrrrr that was sexy.
also very cool in that movie is the scene where she destroys part of her neon decoration ("HELLO THERE" -> "HELL HERE")
jackie chan's film mother in legend of the drunken master is about the funniest female role i've seen in action movies. all of her scenes are fucking great.

I'll say "ditto" to a big chunk of the moments already listed, and then add these;
FIGHT CLUB
. When he remembers that if he is really Tyler, then he's really holding the gun.
. The "realization" scene too.
JURRASIC PARK
. The T-Rex chasing the group in the jeep.
RETURN OF THE JEDI
. The space battle at the end made a big impression on me as a kid.
GHOST IN THE SHELL
. I loved the scene where she's looking at the car parked in the large building at the end - something doesn't look right? And then she realizes there's a big, invisible tank protecting the car.
THE PHANTOM MENANCE
. The moment the choir singing kicks in and Maul lights up both ends of his sabre sends the hairs on my neck into full salute. (though I think the music was too heavy in that end fighting scene, as great as it was)
. The pod race. I really love that whole sequence.
. The Jawa 'crawler' entering the pod race in the bloopers reel. (dvd)
ALIENS
. The dropship flying towards them - yay, we're gunna be saved! - but then it tips over and crashes into the ground.
BLADE RUNNER

The Crow, where Eric is on the roof playing his guitar for the last time before he smashes it,
and the very end where he sees Shelley and they kiss for the last time...tons of emotion in that scene, and the look on Shelley's face when Eric realizes it's her is priceless.

Also:
Toy Story and Toy Story 2 - as a film lover, animation buff, Apple and ILM and Pixar fan and of course SW and Indy fan, every moment of those films is loaded with glory!
Empire Strikes Back - When Luke met Yoda, still one of my favorite moments and when Han and crew are on Hoth. Living up in Canada, we'd pretend our winters were Hoth winters. But the excitement from those scenes. Wow.
Jurassic Park - when the Brachiosaur started walking - that was a real dino - to this day I get chills up my spine. I go to see movies like that with the mind of a 12-year old and I still get excited.
Excalibur - Young Arthur pulls the sword from the stone and Arthur's Funeral Barge Sailing off.
E.T. - When they are out Trick or Treating and he sees Yoda and says 'home, home', Eliot showing E.T. his Star Wars Toys, the flying sequence, the "I'll Be Right Here" sequence,
SW: The Phantom Menace - glad somebody mentioned this - the Pod Race sequence is excellent and when I saw Darth Maul's sequence during the Jedi Fight, especially when he stands behind the electric barriers, that look he gives Qui-Gonn is pure evil!
Jason and the Argonauts - Ray Harryhausen's great skeleton fight sequence
The 13th Warrior - Bulywyf sitting on his 'throne' dead after the end battle.
Indiana Jones - pick a moment again - Indy getting away from the Natives in Raiders, Indy meeting the Grail knight and waving goodbye to him at the end of Last Crusade
The Messenger - Dustin Hoffman's character talking to Joan in the cell. Her version vs. his version of the story makes this a great scene. The Teaser trailer with her running through the sunflowers is also beautiful.
Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story - Bruce and Linda traning together to Randy Edelman's excellent score.
The Professional - Leon - When Leon walks out at the end of the film.
The Abyss - Bud trying to bring Lindsay back to life.
Dragonheart - when Draco is killed and his spirit goes into the stars.
Planet of the Apes - the original - the end sequence.
Snow Falling on Cedars - When we see Ethan's character and his young love running through the cedar forest, and the end when we see why he seems to be one-handed.
Predator - when the group unloads Hell upon that forest after Mac find Blaine dead. Wow! That's still an awesome scene!
The Muppet Movie - Kermit singing the Rainbow Connection, him and Fozzie singing Moving Right Along, the gunfight sequence with the whole gang present at the end. Being able to see the Muppets in real environments was a treat.
The Prince of Egypt - the parting of the sea and the subequent travel through it.
The Lion King - when all the animals are traveling to see the new lion cub. Simba talking to his dad in spirit.
Forrest Gump - Forest hiding with little Jenny. Forrest in the historical footage. Forrest learning that his Jenny is ill.
Titanic - the senior couple lying together on the bed awaiting their destiny while the ship sinks.
O Brother, Where Art Thou? - The baptism sequence and the river Sirens sequence.
True Romance - Terrance and his girlfriend on the beach in Mexico at the end - Hans Zimmer's 'homage' to Carl Orff and the lines 'You're so cool...you're so cool...'
The Nightmare Before Christmas - Jack courting Sally in the graveyard sequence.
T2 - the T-800 going into the liquid steel at the end and giving a thumbs up
The Green Mile - Coffey's speech about not wanting to be saved from execution.

To this day, that's the only part of a movie that's ever made me cry (hey, I was like twelve at the time).
And I meant to include the Predator forest-clearing sequence too . . . *bvvvvvvvvrrrrrrrrppppppppp* |

Cruel Intension - Oh boy, this scene sure takes my breath away. And it's truly an unforgetable moments in film too.
Saving Private Ryan - When the guy got shot on the head right after when he took off his helmet.
True Lies - The scene where the Harrier shots guns and missles at the truck.
Blair Witch - The last scene, i wet my self 30 min after seeing that.
Final Fantasy - Craig truly impressed me with those mountains at the end. And the scene at the beginning where those soldier make a cool jumps from the ship to rescue Aki.
Forest Gump - The scene at the end where the small cute kid get on the school bus. I cry every god damn time seeing that one!
