I have inatvertantly deleted some very important files from my harddrive. I haven't shut down the computer yet, and am looking for some recovery software that can retrieve the files for me...so to speak.

Do any of you guys know any programs or links to a program that can recover deletede files PRIOR to it's installation?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

You could check download.com. I'm not sure if there are any that you don't have to pay for, but there may be some try-it-firsts. You're main problem will be that installing new software may save over the blocks that your files were occupying. If you have a 2nd hard drive or a different partition, try putting any new software on the drive or partition that did not contain the "deleted" file and try not to save any new files on that drive until you retrieve the deleted file. That said, the chances that you will save over a deleted file are often slim, but don't take that for granted.

I'v lost some artwork a few years back due to a bad partition table, tried a norton app to try recovering some of the files...... didn't work.... with the app I tried you go into DOS, you see file's (unnamed) and there file size but I was unable to get any of the files to work.

In my experience, crashed drives, lost files and such are hell to pay. I doubt there is anything that you can do to effectively recover your files. You could send an E-Mail to M$ for info as they should know if there are any techniques.

Well, I could SEE all the the files almost, but not one worked when retrieved, so fu*k it. I'm saving directly onto CD-RW's now.

well.....yea always save to cd rws...or cd rs.........umm just make sure you have back up copys of all your work in case something unfortuante like this does indeed happen.....

maybe it'll be able to save your deleted files.

"lost" files are usually not "lost", only made INVISIBLE
from the OS. meaning that they are probably fully intact,
one just needs to find out which way to retrieve them =)

the problem with retrieving deleted files or files that
has become inaccessible due to hard disk problems
is that with every byte of data you write on the same
partition that your files are/were living on, the risk
of over writing a piece of a "lost" file is very big.

to "preempt" file loss, the best way is to either save
work files on a different partition than the one where
you have the OS installed. or - if you only use a single
partition - mount your problematic hd into a machine
that has a recovery program installed.

since the biggest threat to lost files is them being over-
written by new data it may be a good idea to use the ntfs
format on the partitions since that keeps the files more
"solid" than the fat32 format does. recovering files from
an ntfs partition regularly has a better success ratio than
recovering files from a fat32 partition.

though, if you are using ntfs partitions you can't run
spinrite(www.grc.com) on them, so it's a decision one has to make =)

I struggled with this last november when my h:(work partition)
decided to turn up "unformatted" and my last backup was 4 months
old =\

I managed to recover all psd files after a weeks struggle with
different recovery tools, using win98 boot floppy to find hidden
files, etc. etc. yeah, when win2k makes a mess, sometimes
going with good ol' dos saves the day ;)

oh one more thing...backup is a must if you want to stay
alive when working with paying client =)

Hey bro there is software out there that can recover your files, we had this happen at work a few months back , one of my coworkers installed dreamweaver MX and all his sites for some reason got tanked on the install, I know this does not help you out today but when I get into work tomarrow Ill post the name of the software, they have a demo that will restore files up to 32K .. for free not like that part will help out but the software is about 50 bucks.. small price to pay for recovering some work if you ask me, anyhow you can reach me at [email protected] and I can send you the link when I get in or Ill just post it here, wish you luck man ..

well I found the link, the name of the prog hit me right after I posted anyhow this is the place http://www.bitmart.net/ its called restorer 2000, program worked great when we used it ..

Well, I'm over it, 'cause the files I could find, wasn't properly restored. So I thought f*ck it. No worries and life goes on and what not. Lucky it wasn't a pro job though....
But for future reference and for others it's good to have some links and experiences.
