Well, I WAS working, but then my flatmate's loud son arrived, making concentration impossible. So I decided to fuck around and do something else instead. A while ago, I did a self-portrait called "The Vendetta" ( http://www.gorblimey.com/art/vendetta.jpg ), but I wasn't very pleased with it. It didn't even look like me all that much. So I decided to make a new one.
It was a real blood-feud, the kind where you're not happy till your enemy's guts lie in an interesting tangle at your feet.... _________________ Dignity isn't important. It's everything.

Hey - nice Socar. I like the general luminosity of the pic and the general color, but I think it needs a little variance in them (colors). The portion where the nose meets the forehead and cheeks seems to be a straight flat plane parralel to the forehead right now, but softening the edges of it on the sides would improve that I think (as the angle is about 45 to 60 degrees -- you can get an idea of the shading by looking at other local places on the face that have the same angle in our view and to the light for the lighting).
Nice pic, I like the figure and composition - it's a very nice image. |

Hi Socar! Very nice self portrait .... like the pose and the rendition of clothing very much. I do agree with HoodZ on the left hand and Frost on the forehead though. Very nice! |

Kim-L - Thanks! I just wish I really HAD clothes like that!
eyewoo - Hm...yeah, the rat ring was kinda cool. Should've left that in.
Frost - When bright light is on the face, the modelling of the bridge of the nose area becomes less distinct, and one can't really see the indentation (especially on someone who has a schnozz like mine!). That was the effect I was going for--the lighting is meant to be dramatic enough to make some parts of the face (the side and bridge of the nose, the right edge of the lips, et cetera, indistinct. I kind of dug the effect...but if it looks wrong, it looks wrong.
HoodZ - Thanks! That's not her hand, though--it's a glove that hangs off slightly at the bottom of the hand and over the wrist. I probably shouldn't have made the gloves so close to the skin tone...or I should've made them wrinklier to show they were gloves. (Although, it's easier to see at full res.) _________________ Dignity isn't important. It's everything.

i like the colour range. Works for the image. Gives it a renaissance feel with the warm tones, and the almost monochromatic quality also dates it. Well done.
the hands are weird though. I don't know if you should include the glove at all, since it's really ambiguous and not clearly defined. Looks like she was a frankenstein hand. It's hard enough drawing hands, without adding items that resemble hands and not confusing the viewer. Her left hand is also a little awkward.... i think it's the wrist.
sorry I couldn't be more specific... sometimes it's easy to see if something is off, but it's hard to say what it is exactly or what should be done about it... _________________ Roach604 ([email protected])

I got some more free time today, so I used some of the good crits I got here and elsewhere--hit shift-reload if you don't see the changes!
Anyway, here's what I changed:
* Made larger the left hand which people said was too small
* Someone said it looked like that hand should be holding something, and someone else said that a picture like this needed at least SOME blood, so I gave her a bloody cloth wrapped around that hand.
* Added some refinement to nose-bridge area to fix my lighting
* Fixed folds on cloth on outstretched arm to make the arm position more clear.
TurboYVR - You're right--probably including the gloves DID make it harder to get this right--but, hey, nothing ventured, nothing gained, eh? I think that if something's hard to pull off, that's all the more reason to do it--can't learn it if you don't try it, after all! ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ Dignity isn't important. Oh, and I didn't gut anyone...yet....but there IS this one dude I wouldn't mind splattering all over the floor.
Dr. Monkey - Thanks very much--glad to hear it! _________________ Dignity isn't important. It's everything.

I think this piece turned out very nice. I like the colors and the style. (It's hard to tell if it looks like you though, since you didn't post any picture to compare it to, but I guess it's not that important).
But what is the dark lines running down the thumb and index finger on the right hand? Just a question, not meant as critique...
Anyways, very nice piece! _________________ Markus Schille

zap.br - Thanks! Trying to get a few more gothic/horror pieces together so I can apply to companies like White Wolf and Chaosium and stuff...RPG stuff is a real kick, so I want to do more of it.
Markus Schille - Thank you! The dark lines are seams--it isn't quite clear because of the colour, but there are gloves on the hands.
These are the reference pics I used so you can judge if it looks like me or not:
(ignore the stupid hat)

Pinnacle entertainment (www.peginc.com) is gearing up for a very big release in March, along with it comes several setting books and the like. I know that they're looking for good artists, especially artsists experienced in "darker" styled drawings.
Drop them a line and a link to your portfolio. |

Hey, thanks for the tip, InitialT--I've always thought Deadlands was awesome, so I'd totally jump at the chance to try for work with the company that made it. Unfortunately, I can't seem to find any submissions guidelines or contact information for their art director on their site--do you have any idea how to get in touch with them? _________________ Dignity isn't important. Hey, I don't know why but I inmediatly associated this picture to Stendhal's "Red and Black". The human mind is a mistery... _________________ _ _ _____ _ _

The game's creator, Shane Hensley, is remarkably open about reading his e-mail. He even responded to me personally with his permission when I asked him about creating a computer game based on the Hell on Earth series.
Look on the Conact/Company section for Shane's e-mail address and e-mail him with a link to your portfolio. To save him some more spam, I won't post his e-mail here. |
