I just wondered what other people thought. 'Cos personally I'm just as interested in digital art as non-digital art. A variety of mediums is good -- each medium has its own set of pros and cons. It seems strange and unnecessary to draw a line and say, "Here we show art that was done using a computer, not art that was not." Especiially when digital paintings can bear such similarity to traditionl paintings and painting techniques are fairly portable in that sense. I am aware that non-digital art does get posted but its hardly common.

Personally, I am just as intersted in seeing someone's oil paiting as I am their photoshop painting. Perhaps more at the moment since digital artwork seems to be getting more exposure.

I know this site is supposed to be about digital art, but as far as I'm concerned, making a distinction betwen mediums seems trivial; we already have here a commnity of artists -- that some are more used to one medium than the other does not affect that -- so why not make this place more diverse by posting visual art, as an end, irrespective of the means.

Sorry if my opinion is crap - sorry if I'm missing the point Very Happy
... I can't believe you read thourgh all of that ramble!

good poll, but it lacks answer opinion "both do fine for me", thats why i voted for "who cares?"

usually the ones who post usually digital paintings also post their sketches and other stuff, and the ones, who dont happen to own a wacom tablet and wont even try to paint with mouse, just post their scanned products.
Sijun has a vast majority of digital paintings, but thats not a bad thing, because imo the medium is just a tool to express the picture in your mind.

IF somebody would like to reduce the number of digital paintings or remove them completely, the overall number of pictures would drop drastically, and it might even lead to the death of Sijun.com.

I'd love try traditional art. There have been lots of threads about sketching and life drawing. I guess there are not a lot of people here who have the time to master traditional media like acrylics, oil or watercolors. Traditional paintings are even more appreciated here than digital stuff. It's just more inconvenient.
Btw. do you know www.wetcanvas.com ?

And newbies are often told that they should enhance their traditional skills before they start with digital art. Your stuff is great btw. Do you have any traditional stuff?

The irony is that this thread contains no art at all.

You are right balistic ... didn't occur to me.
And there's a thread in the Digital Art Discussion that asks for pictures ...

bansq: Yeah. I took away the 'who cares' option I originally had because I wanted votes of 'yes's or 'no's. I figured if people don't care, then they click the back button, and without the 'who cares' option they'd be more inclined to choose one Razz

AndyT: A good point that I completely overlooked: the comparitive coveinince of digital art. yeah. And you've seen my stuff? Cool! that's cool, thanks for the complements, I feel I can only take them half seriously since it's not so great in my eyes... Yeah. I haven't scanned in much of my traditional stuff but to be honest, i'd completely overlooked myself when it comes to digital art. i'll mkae an effort and scan some stuff in. I'm quite busy with school and stuff. Only 'couple years left Very Happy

Balisitic, AndyT: Razz I'll delete this thread soon - I've got some good feedback. All that remains for me to do is to create a non-digital art thread -- once i've done some scans.

Thanks guys for your feedback!

People should post more non-digital work...but how many can actually do it. I won't mention any names, but a lot of artist here hide behind there tablets and software programs. For that matter, a lot of artistst, especially younger ones, have never even picked up a paintbrush...don't know what toning or laying gesso on a canvas is, the tactile difference between oil & acrylic, or WORSE: using a hairdryer to dry a layer of paint before you paint on the SAME LAYER, not LAYER 15 w/35% opacity!

You see a few master's work here...you know who they are Wink But too much hero worshipping going on here. They are humans like we are. Here's a tip before your mouth loosens from the hinge the next time they drop a speedpainting or something in your favorite thread: Think where it came from. BASICS...and that starts with the traditional, homie. So study that instead of how lasso the works.

Of course, there are exceptions. I've noticed a few postings of sketchbook pieces. I mean the NICE sketchbook pieces where considerations of the basics: composition, tone, etc are explored. But, RARELY do I see a traditional painting because alot of people here simply don't know how or are afraid to do it.

I've been a member for less than a month. I used this forum to get a better understanding of digital painting before returning to school. I started figure painting class last week and I for one, will definitely post my sketches when class is nearing completion. I just had to get this digital bug out of my system, enjoy my vacation, play with toys, before real work began.

Anyway, that's my two cents...sorry! To sum it up, more tradtional painting would be nice to see. I'd rather see somebodies watercolor goof up than there 2 hour PS or Painter crap. Big ups, Capt Fred. this should make an interesting subject.

Very well said Reakshun - it amazes me the number of people I see who have some respectable talent in digital media, but have no concept at all when it comes to realworld art work.

And I really don't see any irony in there not being any artwork in this thread...it's a poll... Question

Yes, i think people should try to focus more on traditional media, but it is obviously more convenient to work digitally for many people. Not to mention cleaner =)

I often post links to Loomis books ... about tone and color! But people seem to be ... I don't know ... afraid of it?
I haven't studied that stuff either but I know why I don't improve as much as I want (almost don't improve at all) ...

There's a Digital Art Discussion Board for threads like this one!

yeah, all this talk is good! I look foward to seeing more traditional artwork...

myself? well i confess to being as new to traditional painting as I am digital painting. I started them both fairly recently (before, I was mostly drawing), but I must say that I prefer oils to photoshop - dunno why... seems cooler somehow. I would say that I'm pretty similar at both becuase I find its easy to transfer lessons I've learnt doing one to the other.

To be honest I have not that much against those who are less able traditional artists -- and I don't mean to imply that others who've commented do have something aginst them -- But I would like to see more traditional art from those who think that they've got something worth showing. Which barely includes myself, but I will post some anyway Confused

It hadn't occured to me that polls were for posting artwork so much as discussing the poll Razz

AndyT: What I sorta meant was that I considered a poll like a discussion thread. Not so much for artwork, but more about whatever the topic or issue was that the poll was asking about. Still i confuse? As a general rule, just ignore me... I rarely have something valueble to say Razz

(I put this poll here instead of on the discussion place as a sort of sneaky, naughty move simply becuase this thread gets more traffic. I should have more respect for the organisation/catagorisation of sijun forums, but I don't intend for this thread to be too long term... promise!)

p.s. AndyT, Thanks for that wetcanvas URL. cool Very Happy

Ok I get that now. It seemed to me as if you didn't get that it's the wrong place. But I really wouldn't do such bold maneuvers. It's not worth it. There are even deeper thought in the right place Wink

Not once did anybody get bad reactions for posting non-digital art. Even though this forum was founded on digital ideals, people have been posting tradtional art here and no one even blinked.

I think it makes not difference at all. Just post art, period.
