Art done with a paint program is pixel based, or raster art (also referred to as bitmaps). Some paint programs also include vector art but that's not their main function. When pixel based art is resized, there can be loss of visual quality. The image may become blurred, there may be loss of color quality, and/or edges of angles and curves may become pixelated (jagged, like stairsteps).
In graphics, a vector is a line defined by two points, the beginning point, and the ending point. A bezier curve is made up of multiple vectors joined together by a series of points. It can be either open (a curve) or closed (an "object", or "shape", depending on what the program's terminology is). In graphics programs, text is also vector based. Vector art can be resized without loss of visual quality. Edges remain crisp and since there are no pixels involved, there's no pixelation.
There's a very basic Painter tutorial on my website showing how to trace a hand drawn curve using a bezier curve. It shows both the vectors and the control points along the curve. It might give you a rough idea of what vector art can look like, though vector art can be much more than this simple curve:

Someone else will hopefully be able to show you some really nice vector art. |

most Logos etc are done in vector, which allows them to be sized to any size from a postage stamp to a 48 sheet without the loss of detail..
u don't have to use Illustrator, there are many other Packages out there to do vector artwork in, Freehand, Flash, Corel Draw *spit*
vector artwork is made up of 'points' which connect to eachothe, either as a straight line or as a Bezier curve. in order to have a fill of colour the points need to join up.
i made this in Freehand
Drawing in Vector takes alot of logical thinking, its not as easy as just putting ur pen to paper and selecting what colour u want draw in or fill in. |
