I've got a question. There is a job for a 2d artist in a small game company in my town. I'm planning to go there and offer my skills Smile Yeah i got NO experience and i suck BUT i still want to try because there might be no oporiunity like this ever again. They are looking for someone skilled in a 2D graphic software and it's good if you got "pencil skills". Probably a person will have to do some textures for a 3d game , i don't know some gui stuff maybe some concepts in the future. So i'm asking what should i show them? I don't know maybe few wall textures , few character textures, some of my drawings ? some of my photoshop paintings ?

keep in mind that this is Poland, we do here smaller things for smaller money so the expectations are a little smaller.

Here's my advice:

1)Show textures! Show that you can do variety of textures(buildings, nature, people, animals, sci-fi, fantasy, vehicles..etc). Show that you can do both gritty/dirty looking textures and clean ones.

2)If you can, make a set of them and apply them to a level. There are lots of free stuff on the internet you can use. Just the Half-Life community alone has tons of resources that will teach you how to texture a Half-Life level. You can either take some screenshots, or show them the actual level if they are open to that.

3)Show some artwork. Preferably paintings as they show your painting skills--which is the most relevant for texture work.

Other than that, unless they are asking you to do concept work too, you don't have to show anything else. If they are, just show your concept stuff as well.

I did exactly what you are applying for from 1998 to 2001, and I've never had a problem finding a job. The longest I've been between a game job was something like a month. Take a look at my website to see the kind of stuff I have on there. My website was the only thing I've ever shown to prospect employers as a portfolio.

I think if you have some cool concept drawings you should show them.
Maybe create a skin for it...

Actually I just want to

AndyT: thank you Smile

Lunatique: tanks. Few good points. I did't think earlier about the point 1), i will try to make them more diffrent form each other. I also was searching for some half life level that needs to be textured but with no luck, i will try later as i will have more textures.
