For me both Painter and photoshop are cool for drawing. Im just more familiar with photoshop.
But there are more possibilitys in Painter to draw e.g. on different canvas. And all the tools for drawing are more realistic.
There are a few things which can be done more easier than in photoshop. But it's possible to built your own brushes to "imitate" painter. I would say install both and check out there benefits.

This is rather like asking which is better, chocolate or strawberry ice cream. Both are good, both have their benefits, but everybody has their own opinion about it.

I used to use Photoshop as well, but when I got my hands on Painter Classic, I just _had_ to have Painter 7. Now I just use PS for the editing tools ^_^;.

Check out Lunatique's wonderful post "Make your life easier in Painter"

http://forums.sijun.com/viewtopic.php?t=30380

...or use the search function to look up similar topics ^_^ A few people have asked this question before, I think.

Hope this helps!

i use to do everything in photoshop...only because i was very familiar with its layout...also because i didnt have painter at the time, also no tablet as well...and hearing that painter was best with a tablet it wasnt worth getting

but as soon as i bought a tablet i soon fell in love with painter because its all the traditional mediums in a digital program...even though the layout is a bit more cluttered and you dont know exactly what everything does...i still prefer it over photoshop
