Like some others have mentioned - Tetris.

Some of the earlier Mario Brothers games were always great fun with long 'staying power'.

ADOM - I've been trying to win Rogue since '81, and never managed to, but I've won ADOM a few times. Oh, and ADOM 1.0 just came out...lots of new features...if you haven't played ADOM, you've got to. It's insanely addictive.

Hm...and then the rest of the list:

Below the Root (C64, oddly addictive)
Moon Patrol (C64...I once got all the way to 'Z')
Super Mario Brothers (Woot! Woot!)
Fallout II, and Fallout I, to a lesser extent
Crystalis (Nintendo...again, addictive, but I never won.)
Castle Wolfenstein (my father and I used to have huge Castle Wolfenstein wars, trying to nab the high scores. I was SO honked when he found the secret level first.)
Baldur's Gate (not really that brilliant, but my boyfriend and I had a great time clicking on that goddam hamster and making up silly voices for the NPCs)

I'm sure there were others, but those are the ones that pop immediately to mind. And now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go smite a few r's. (Kill rats in ADOM, that is.)

People who love the Lucasarts games...

....are cool.

I'm selling these fine leather Jackets.

Quake 3 is the best FPS. Team Arena is still eating up my time.

Diablo 2. I'm been hooked on this game since it's release.

Best ever.
Super Mario Kart 64. God that game is fun.

the one and only "Operation Flashpoint"

this game is the closest experience in a game to a real life combat.

I forgot one: Darklands. It's an old RPG set in mediaeval Germany. Really fun. It's not being produced by the company that originally made it any more, but you can still order it online.

TRON! .....

ok, maybe not,
then I would say Street Fighter II. C'mon! Would there have been any fighting games genre if it wasn't for SFII

Shadowman for the DC is my personal favorite. It has great graphics for it's time and had a real nice game engine and for people that are into dark games this game will scare the shit out of you once you get into the Asylum. It is really gory and has a really moody sound track that changes from nice to phsyco depending on the area you are in.
Most people I talk to gave up after the first few hours because it has a real involved story with a lot of fighting, platforming and puzzles, but not me I loved it so much I finished it in 45 hours. Not bad since it is a 60 hour game!

I've just got a new favorite: Arcanum. I got it last weekend and I can't stop playing it. It's kind of like Fallout, I guess that's the reason I liked it..

I always find it hard to single out a game and tout it as the best. game. ever. (in Comic Book Guy voice). So I'll just list some of my favorites. Thief, Doom, Fallout, Grim Fandango, Quake III, Diablo, System Shock 2, Deus Ex... ok I'll stop now =)

There are so many favorites of mine but I would have to say Bard's Tale III would be one of the games at the top of my list.
