Well, as most of you are probably aware, XBOX launched today in North America.
So, who picked one up? And, what do you think? Worth the money? Comparable to PS2? Why or why not?
Sorry, I don't mean to seem like some video game dictator or anything, I'm just curious.
Cheers! |

There is a reason to get XBox, that is to play the new Star Wars: Obi-Won game that has abandoned the PC platform. But then again, I wouldn't buy a console just for one game that I want, and at this time, XBox titles are mostly crappy Japanese game wannabes developed by American developers. That's the most disturbing thing of all..
Besides, if I get a new PC next year, and Jedi Outcast is coming out.. Woohoo!! |

My best friend picked up one yesterday. He seems to like it a lot especially with DOA3, AF: Delta Storm, and Halo.
It may be a 'PC' but the console industry has been doing better than the PC games industry has. With the exception of some games in general a lot of them either haven't lived up to the hype or come out needing patches galore.
If only money did grow on trees! |

My boyfriend and his brother left at 4:00 am to get in line to get one.
Not too confident in the whole Microsoft thing but I am satisfied with the console itself. But we'll have to see since we purchased our PS2 when it first came out and less than six months down the road it "broke down" on us and had to purchase a new one.
Amazing graphics and load time compared to the PS2.
Halo and the new Oddworld are great games, the only thing I've had a "problem" with is the controller layout. We also bought Madden 2002 I think it is and Nascar, I have yet to play those.
The only thing I don't like about the X Box is you don't have the dvd feature when purchased, but if you have a dvd player or PS2 that really doesn't matter.
For the price of it though I really think they should have included the dvd feature. |

it's expensive, it's ugly, (like an old saturn, but bigger), it's black and sad, it's powerfull (but not so much), it's heavy, it's not fun at all, it has halo, but halo will be on my pc soon, and... what's the need to have another console anyway?
more realistic games, games more like movies, more money spend in devs, more and more people in devcos, and no time anymore to make a good game ! (because i must finish this damn graphic engine to do blood spurting of evil soldiers)
i go back to super monkey ball, it's so much fun. |

I got a special edition xbox couple days ago, (the only good so far that has come out of MS taking over the place where I work). It's transparent green with Bill's signature printed on the centre.
I have no time to play games, it's for my kids, so they can leave me and my big screen tv alone when they want to see some kid's movie on DVD for the 900's time. A computer maintenance guy visited my house, and played some Halo on it, he seemed to be really enthusiastic about it. Yeah, I admit it looked like fun. |

I think it's comparable to a PS2.
The thing crashed the instant I hit the 'Start' button. |

I played one at a local electronics store. It was nice. But after a few minutes I realized something, I've become too old for console games.
paranoid?: according to Wired magazine Microsoft is LOSING $110 for every XBox sold. Wanna bankrupt m$? Buy a few million XBoxes |

actually, EVERY company loses money on all hardware (mainly consoles.) this is how SEGA became a software company. they were so much in debt, they were unable to support theirselves w/ software AND hardware. therefore they switched to software. |

Halo had damn well better come out for the PC. Wasn't it originally going to be a PC game?

None of the new consoles (X-Box, PS2, Gamecube) have me particularly excited.
vantid, are you crazy? The Dreamcast was the most wonderful thing to happen to console gaming in the last 5 years in my opinion. True, support wasn't the greatest because companies were holding out to develop for the PS2 but if you look at the DC library, it had the highest quality game to total game ratio of any system to date (at least I thought so). And since it was made by Sega, it had some of the most innovative games of any system to date as well (Samba de Amigo, Shen-Mue, Seaman, Jet Grind Radio). Oh yeah, and it had online gaming 1 1/2 years ahead of other consoles.
But I digress, this thread is about the X-Box isn't it?
My main faults with the X-Box are these:
1. The controller is like a cinder block with buttons glued on it. I swear they must've product tested with 8 foot tall men with abnormally large hands. I'm 6 feet tall and have average sized hands for someone of my height and my hands cramped after like 5 minutes of play with the X-Box.
2. Asthetically it looks like it came from the early 1980s.
3. I haven't been all that impressed by the games at launch so far. I don't like FPS games so Halo didn't do it for me. I love fighting games but the Dead or Alive series has always been pretty shallow and lame. I didn't play Munch's Oddessy long enough to get a good impression of it.
And even though its an X-Box thread, this is random musings so let me tell you what I think of the Gamecube and PS2 as well. Gamecube has me slightly interested. Luigi's Mansion and Rogue Leader are both awesome games and you can't deny Super Monkey Ball. But besides those three games, it just doesn't have much else going for it in my opinion. Oh but the controller is really nice.
As for the PS2, again, I hate the controller, Sony has a terrible reputation as a developer and publisher for various well founded reasons, and their hardware has a tendency to be very poorly constructed to the point that their consoles just stop working after a few years of service.
I'll be interested to see how durable the Gamecube is. Since its Nintendo's first foray into a disc based system, I think it might have some hardware problems just as the PS had.
Well, there are my random musings for the year. If you've read this far then you deserve a lollipop. Unfortunately, I don't have one. |

Halo was originally meant for the PC, however, after Microsoft (Bastards!) bought Bungie, Halo was to be exclusive to the XBox, but after some legal hassles (is that spelled correctly?) Halo was to be released for PC 6 months after the XBox release. That's what I read anyway.
About the PS2, the problem with it is that Sony had to lose a lot of internal memory in order to get some real speed into the machine, which makes it harder for the programmers.
About the Gamecube, I couldn't care less. Never really liked Nintendo. My first console ever was the SEGA Mastersystem and after that it was the MegaDrive (Genesis I believe it was called in the US).
Personally, I'm happy with my PS2... |

Sheeesh. I played my friend's Xbox. The thing rocks. Calm down guys, microsoft is a big spooky corporation; but so is sony and nintindo. Regardless of who made it, its the latest and the greatest, and the most fun I've had gaming in a long time.
I also have fairly small hands, and the controller felt great to me.

Personally, I have never fallen in love with a console game. I have never played a console game from begining to end, and even with that disposition, I ended up buying a Dreamcast. I was very impressed with DC, and I bought it mostly for Soul Calibur, DOA2, and VF3.
I really belive that DC is the best console ever developed so far. It might not have the impressive specs as other next gen consoles, but look at the QUALITY of DC's friggin' game library. I have NEVER heard of any complaints from DC owners, and I don't know anyone who has negative feelings about DC, including the developers who didn't want to dev for it. They made that decision based on business considerations, not because they don't like the console.
Xbox, Gamecube, PS2. I don't care. It's all about the games. Whichever one with the better games will win. In the meantime, I'll just go on immersed in my PC gaming heaven.

Whoa, dude.. DC is one huge piece of bloatware. The game library developed for DC has maybe, MAYBE 5 good titles. The rest are crap. Ya know, there is a reason why it stopped production after just over a year... :P |

Anyway the world of console is starting to evolve as fast as the PC so i'm ready to bet Sony will make a PS3 in a couple a year.
The day when people will be stupid enough
to spend money to play with a PC on their TV....ugh! |

Corn Pops,
You're absolutely right, there is a reason that they stopped producing the DC after 2 years, but it had nothing to do with games. The reason was that developers were holding out for the PS2 because at that point Sony had such a strangle hold on the industry that Sega's wonderful machine didn't stand a chance in hell. But I agree with Lunatique and Lemur-X on this one, the DC was and is an absolutely amazing machine. Sega just had a very bad reputation after so many commercial failures, that's all. But right behind the DC, the Saturn is my favorite console (followed closely by the SNES and the Sega CD). But both the Sega CD and the Saturn were commercial failures yet they both had great libraries of games (for certain genres at least).
Now, its time to go on a "10 reasons why Sega systems rock (DC, Sega CD, Saturn, and Genesis included here)" tyrade.
1. Sonic games
2. Panzer Dragoon Saga
3. Dragon Force (to this date I have yet to play a game that rivals this games fun)
4. Soul Caliber
5. Shining Force Series (Can you tell I love RPGs?)
6. Grandia series
7. Working Designs prior to the Playstation (Lunar, Vay, Albert Odessey, Dragon Force, etc.)
8. Arcade perfect Capcom ports (The PS couldn't have exact ports like the Saturn because it didn't have enough RAM, so in games like Marvel vs Capcom, the tag function was left out of the PS version, talk about lame)
9. Shen Mue, Jet Grind Radio, Samba de Amigo, and other innovative Sega titles.
10. The 2k series of sports games and even the Sega sports games before that (Joe Montana's Sports Talk Football anyone?).
But I digress, I'm not a fanboy, I recognize that Sega made huge mistakes and they paid for them. So, I'll eventually buy which ever system's games appeal to me the most and looking at them right now, the PS2 might be my choice for this gen, even though out of its current libarrary of over 100 games, there are only like 4 that I actually want.
But in actuality, I'll probably eventually end up purchasing all 3 systems, I always do after all. Looking over at my TV, I own an NES, SNES, Genesis, Sega CD, Saturn, DC, Playstation, N64, Neo Geo Pocket, Gameboy and an Atari 2600. No Master System or Turbo Graphix 16 unfortunately. And thankfully, no 32X or Virtual Boy.

I left out a ton of stuff so that I could keep the list relatively short. But yes, the Streets of Rage series is a classic, as are the Vectorman and Phantasy Star series. |
