Hi all.
Here's a new take on a cover I should have finished a looong time ago, but the client did not like my sketch... so here's a new one.
Still... very inspired by the lightning and moods of howard pyle and N.C. Wyeth...
I would like to hear what you think of the composition and colouring

I like it.
It's more clich than the other sketches you had, but it looks good too =)
I think the composition is very balanced and well done.
The lighting looks good so far, it looks like a dawn, although I can't see why the part below the flag is dark... if the light is set on the left of the image and a bit upwards so the boat and the child cast those shadows, I think that part would be lighted... maybe I'm wrong?
Hope I've helped you, and good work ![Very Happy](images/smiles/icon_biggrin.gif) _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

haha read what you had written in the first post , is it for a book cover ? or what cover is it for ? When I said that it would be very good as a cover i thought it was just a random picture , I didn't say it cause you mentioned it, so it's obviously a good cover ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ "Remember , the master has been an apprentice also." |

Ragnarok > thanks... the shadow on the ship is the clouds... I like trying to make these weird light situations... but it's hard to make it work...
I know it's more clich, but I think it works better than the others!
robust > yes... hehe... it's a cover for treasure island!
and thanks

I like it. As someone else said, pirate ships are nothing new, but if its done in an evocative way, who cares? The colors are nice but I almost wish for even a bit more saturation overall, IMVHO. |

it's beautiful--i love the way you did the water and the ship so far---two things sticks me in the eye though---his right arm seems a bit funny...like it should be bent towards him rather than away from him---and his face kind of has a blank expression..like he's not having an adventure---every else is inspirational though--looking forward to the finished piece!! _________________ www.andresguzman.com

thanks...
I had troubles with his arm, but I think what you said could fix it...
and maybe I should saturate it a bit... as for his expression... I used myself as a reference... drawing myself in the mirror... and I guess I had a kind of dull expression when doing it... hehe...
I'll post the update/finished piece!

yeah, I opened up your pic in photoshop, went in to hue/saturation. I turned up the saturation a bit, then chose 'yellow' instead o master and made the yellows warmer, oranger. I like it like that more. Only a little, but definately more.
other thing: I think that the cahracter doesn't look cartoony enough or in the right way, just his head, it's not very 'cutesy'. I liked what the head looked like it was going to look like in the sketch.
finally: Awesome pic! really cool love the water especially. Just play with levels and curves I reckon. Try getting some blues in the darker areas, and less blues and more reds in the lighter areas I think. But... *shrug* you are better off ignoring me. |

Here's a example

You know what this really needs? To be set in space... with aliens! Oh Oh and space windsurfing boards! And and..
Hmmm wait maybe that's not the best idea. It's coming along nicely though! something in the face bothers me.. i can't really pin it down, maybe its the angle or the way its painted.. could be that heavy cheek shadow.. not really sure, it just doesn't 'feel' quite like the rest of the picture. I'm not much help ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ creatures in my head /deadzebra, inc |

It's not on his face napalm, its on his head . The tiny 12" octopus jumped out of the water n... n/m
Jk.
Hmm it may be that the face looks a little too saturated with color than the rest of the picture or maybe it needs a little atmosphere in between the boy and us to make him look a little more IN the picture. If this doesn't help with anything just brush right over my comments
Just trying to help. I love that ship though... ooh! _________________ Meep meep |

Hmm i don't know if the ship is sinking or something , cause i can't make out if it's smoke/clouds is coming from the ship or if they are just clouds..
But if he has just left the ship to examine a location the ship would be intact i guess... so why is the .. what is it called ... the "mast" the thing that the sails are attached to leaning to the left it looks like they are going to brake. _________________ "Remember , the master has been an apprentice also." |

The boat is rocking from the waves and is leaning to a side, the mast looks like that because of the perspective, alot of fog/mist in the air which makes poor visibility the farther back you try to see, although I didn't make it, this is how it appears to me
If it is smoke and the mast is going to break off then oops ![Razz](images/smiles/icon_razz.gif) _________________ Meep meep |

It looks great
Now the cloud shadows are more appearent and look nice. The water also, and the overall painting really =)
Also, I think the expression could have used a little bit more of work, but it's ok. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

Hey eBoy,
that's a really nice pic!! I made an overpaint few days ago but couldn't post it because my website almost reached it's traffic limit (there was a link on the frontpage of cgchannel.com).. basically I just made the shadows more dominant and increased the saturation, here it is in case you want to see it.. sorry for the very crappy quality, my website is still suffering from the traffic
Looking forward to see new pics from you! _________________ www.TimoVihola.com

hi all and thanks A LOT for the crits.
I think you are all right in your comments... I'm not too happy with this piece overall and i think the character lacks... well... everything...
BG... cheers mate!!! I wish I'd seen your overpaint before I delivered my drawing to the client... there's soo much more ambience and mood in your version. I don't think i would put THAT many colours in the sky though, but apart from that, it rules!
Appreciate the effort - I owe u one
well... off to the next piece - will post soon - need all the help i can get!
Cheers.

The ship isn't burning, it's very dark clouds... sort of... (yeah i was lazy and couldn't be bothered to paint the whoe ship!
Robust: yeah... that's actually a good idea! instead of the octopussy
