I know this has been asked a dozen times but somehow I can't seem to find any of them. I've been fiddling with the search for ten minutes but...grrr
quite humiliating

So can anyone point me to a good commercial webhost? (Of course it needs to be cheap, with unlimited bandwith, sexy helpdesk girls etc. etc.)
Or maybe someone has the the earlier threads about this subject bookmarked somewhere?

thanks

Futurequest http://www.futurequest.net is the best there is. Check out their forums or any review from them on the net and you'll see.
I've been using them for a year with no complaints.

http://www.webaxxs.com ... Also has inexpensive plans.

You're going to pay high prices for unlimited bandwidth - very high. In most cases - unless you're dealing in MP3s, 3 to 5 gigs of bandwidth per month is adequate.

Also, most of the inexpensive hosting plans use a shared IP address, which for all intensive purposes works just like a dedicated IP address.

I was told www.lunarpages.com is a good host. The info on the site makes it look like its a real good webhosting plan and I might use them when my current provider thingy runs out (in April if I send a quit message, what I surely will do). Anybody have experience with them?

ahwell I don't expect the whole world to want visit our site. But since both my wife and I would want to put our portfolio up on the same account, and we've also both been working with video a lot, it seemed useful to have a lot of bandwith. At the same time. A 10 meg movie could still be downloaded 700 times. Which I doubt will happen. And I noticed that you can password protect certain directories at the webaxxs one. So that could be a solution as well.

And I have another question. A friend and I have been toying with the idea of setting up a forum for the dutch art world. Would that be possible with a cheap account like that? I have no idea how much bandwith that would take. And you need a cgi bin or php or something? (As you can see I am not a web-buff)

And whats up with the domain name? It seems like you get the domain name with it..right?

A forum like this here would need php support, since its phpbb afaik.
About the domain name, yes you have to get that registered if you want to have one, but the webhost surely does that for you. At least I didnt see one where you cant choose to get a new domain registered or transfer one you own already to them.

Best thing to do would be to write all stuff you want to know together and email it to the companies you consider for hosting, that way you see how good their support will probably be. Im with my host now for quite some time, but only started recently to write some question-mails, really simple ones too, but it took them ages to reply with some bullshit I didnt want to know, so thats part of the reason I want to switch.

edraket... I have a pretty heavy graphics website at http://www.eyewoo.com . Alexa lists it at around 66,000th most busy site. (To compare, Sijun is listed at around 58,000th.) My site uses about 4 to 5 gig a month of bandwidth - sometimes over 5.

I do have a bunch of MP3s on my site as well, but they are hosted under a different account so they do not affect the graphics site bandwidth.

Sooo... I would expect that a hosting package with enough hardrive space and 5 gig of bandwidth would do fine...

What is this system? Where can it be found?

Alexa isn't exactly an accurate system, as it only tracks people who've installed their spyware.

I host bprince.com with OC . They've been quite solid for the past six months or so, in terms of uptime. I pay $20 a month for a gigabyte of disk space, my own FTP site, unlimited e-mail addresses, and 20 GB of bandwidth.

here's what i found in terms of decent looking sites. I haven't got a website and i'm pretty much unknown at sijun (possibly because i'm too embarrassed of my crappy skills to post anything hehe) so this may not be wonderfully helpful or reliable, but those are the hosts i'm most interested in for when i soon get a website. To be honest, the one i'm most interested in is the first one. I hardly keep myself updated on how the others are doing.

listed by preference (meaning what i would try first):

http://www.alphaomegahosting.com/index.html

http://lunarpages.com/

http://www.cyberpixels.com/

http://www.webmasters.com/

http://www.e-starr.net/

http://www.totallyhosted.net/

and of course to review/read reviews of those sites,

http://www.webhostingtalk.com/

hope this helps.
