about this family that moves out to the country to be closer to their mother who's ill in the hospital. it's about these two wonderful little girls and their neighbor totoro.... and a little boy who makes some of the funniest faces ever seen in film.... it's soooooo good.
ps. what's with recent increase in sad posts? is this some joke contest? who could come up with the biggest sob story?

it's my favorite movie!!!
i bought the japanese dvd, there are english subs, and a second dvd with a lot, a lot of storyboards.
this movie is the proof that we can make movies without conflict.
no good/bad story, no real goals, a really simple story (but with very good and subtle characterisation, and with a lot of symbolism and deep toughts), and yet... it's charming and beautiful...

Yeah, I love that movie too. I love the art book too. It's filled with some amazing backgound paintings. It's worth tracking down as much as the movie.

Totoro is Miyazaki's best. All of his other films have elements/scenes I didn't quite agree with, but Totoro is about as close to perfection as a storyteller can get. Maybe it's because of the mythical nature of the film, you don't expect everything to make sense--you are just caught up in the way it makes you feel like a child again.

I love Toroto, it's my favorite anime movie. But those little black hairballs spooked me really bad when I first saw it though.

I just saw Totoro for the first time a few months ago and man was I blown away. The story and the animation are great (as can be expected from Miyazaki). Especially the animation on the younger sister, absolutely top notch.

I like Mononoke, Kiki, and Laputa alot also. I really want to see Pocco Rosso, anyone here seen it (or Castle of Caglistro or Spirited Away or the Totoro sequel (its only like 5 minutes long but Miyazaki considers it to be the sequel) for that matter)?

Suny, how much did you get those DVDs for? I just looked at a DVD import site and they were between 75 and 85 USD each for Kiki and Totoro. I would really like to get them but that's pretty steep for one movie. Also, I'd have to buy a new DVD player that could play region 2 dvds as well. So that'd be a huge investment for me unless you know of a good place where I can get them cheaper.
