raganok, thanks!
I Lee, that was not my intention. Don't know what he looks like. Just a head.
Tried to make him look beat up and swollen, tough to make look right. Huge purple cheek, hehehe... uhh. |

Spooge,
How do you make the color on top blend with the color beneath it? it mimics loose paint so well (feels very organic). Is this something you can only do in painter, or is it possible in PS? _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

Not exactly 'gangster's - but definetly a force to be reckoned with...

Tried to lay off the gee Ma look at me brushwork on this one. Doesn't quite fit the subject. I purposefully made the head a little off, not symmetrical, one eye a little higher, etc. These guys were a little tweaked, paint em that way. Should put a little tomato sauce on his shirt.
I Lee, I am using the stock stuff with Painter, one of the blend tools. I would not have the slightest idea of how to modify anything. In the most controlled tests, carefully changing one variable at a time, I cannot for the life of me predict those brushes. I just paint at random and try to deal with what it gives me. Kinda fun actually.
I can't remember which tool does this, I think just crank up the Bleed? You can get PS to do it, but not as well.
Question for painter heads, if any are out there. Are the brush categories, like say pastels and brushes, completely different animals? In other words, could you take a pastel variant, change the controls and make it into a camelhair brush? If not, then there is something under the hood that I can't change? If so, what is it that makes these different? |

Spooge- It's actually quite simple--just one of those things where you need to sacrifice an afternoon exploring to find out.
In your Brush Control panel, you have the General tab. In the Dab Type is where all the different styles of brush "base" are stored. Think of that as your foundation to build upon for a brush. Then, just work your way down to Stroke Type, Method, Subcategory..etc
In your example question, the pastels are a "different animal" simply because they start out with a different base(circular dab type, and Grainy Hard Cover for Subcategory). If you want to transform it into an oil bristle brush, you simply change the Dab Type to something like Camel Hair, or Bristle Spray. So, yeah, they are different "animals" in a way. When you make a change like that, the only remaining thing that makes it a pastel tool is simply the name.
About the Bleed thing. Basically, in your Well tab in Brush Control, you have Resaturation(color intensity of paint your tool carries), Bleed(how much blending happens when your tool makes contact with the canvas), and Dryout(how long until your paint runs out in a stroke). So, if you have very low Resaturation, high Bleed, and high Dryout, you'd get a tool to puts very pale version of the color you selected on the canvas, but blends/pushes/pulls the paint already on the canvas all over the place, and whatever faint color is carried on your tool will go a looooong way, never "drying out." |

Thanks Spooge and Lunatique. I may have to break down and buy Painter, cause I only have a stripped down (bundled) version right now. I seriously dig the way that loose slapped on paint looks, and I can't seem to get anything close to it in PS. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

A pic I did for Deathrow concept-art contest some time ago. I ran off with the first place. It was the pencil sketch of this image that won though. I can see why, coz' I still suck at colouring. _________________ The Life of Oscar Alexander |
