Sijuners, it's been a while since I've posted but I haven't had anything to post. This was done for a book cover. Tried a new technique out that helped create some quick depth. I'll show it to the AD on monday but wanted to submit it for a look-over here. Any AD type of advice?

It's an interesting shot and i like the colour. There is something that can be improved with respect to his legs. The thighs looks kind'ov long and wood-block looking instead of muscular. Also, his pelvic region (bone structure) is abit small for his build. His legs could be abit shorter too. Right now the perspective looks questionable. Check a real model for references. Especially with the kind'ov perspective you chose.

Speaking of perspeictive, is the picture from my point of view? It seems like it...and yet it doesn't at the same time. I'm putting down vanishing pt. guide lines and things aren't matching up. If you want to keep the same composition, create the POV from directly across the figure.

What I like about your picture? Really NICE textures on the trees!!!! and on the creature underneathe.
Great face and torso structure but watch the muscle on the left forearm. The large muscle starts after the elbow not before it.

Good painting....something to think about: what kind of mood are you trying to create?

Just some suggestions. As usual, take it or leave it....just doing my best.

Happy New year!!!!!

Is the guy hiding from/hunting some giant snake? Because the snake is very hard to notice at first glance. Maybe if its head was in the frame it would have been more apparent.

Very cool technique. The picture is very well done imo. Impressive indeed.

I did some structural work for you. Hope it helps. I like your picture and I"m enthusiastic to see it get better!

If you feel that the image helps you, can you copy it? I can't leave it on my server for long.

-Good luck! GREAT IMAGE!

very pretty. i agree with the crit about the legs(too long and log-like) bu the rest looks just fine to me.

only very very small thing i thought about - i would look for slightly more contrust on the figure since he is the subject and also closer to us than the ground and the near invisible snake down there.

and what is that blur for? im puzzled.

but basically, even just the way is it, it's awsome. the colors, shading and values are top notch.

question - where is the text gonna be??

Guess it depends if you want it to look 'real' or what, I think the legs look 'cool' just not 'real'. Everyone likes cowboy bebop but do you think Spike has room for internal organs? I'm not good with talking about 'style' though.

Here's my impression: cool pose, cool char, interesting setting (colors work very well). I'm not into anatomy maself like bluetraveller, who did a thankworthy job on showing off the (minor IMHO) flaws - for enhanced eye candy!!1

666Flat

Enhanced eye candy?
-how very flattering

Showing off the MINOR flaws of anatomy!
oh....yeah. I guess i was wasting my time....like so many other art teachers. I mean really, why waste time learning anatomy when you can color real well?

Seriously...style is important but if your anatomy is incongruent with the historical integrity of the character and its surroundings ex. surreal vs realism as this picture portrays, no matter how beautiful the composition, gesture, color is ... it's still going to elicit mixed reviews.

Ignore anatomy and perspective at your own peril... mwuah hahahaha!

I have to agree with Flat and the others, this piece has a beautiful sense of color and design. I don't think the exaggerated anatomy detracts from it at all. Every artist should have a good grasp of anatomy, but as with any rules part of the reason for learning them is to know when to break them. I'd be interested in finding out what the client had to say.

Great work & texturing, I agree with the previous comments and I like to add one more. I would love to see the Snake/Dragon have more of a relationship betwing the foreground & background. It seams as disconected after the tree somehow, may be it needs to show some of the torso scales in the back to relate better.

My two cents

Thanks guys.

Bluetraveller and others: I think I see what you are getting at and I appreciate you taking the time that you did. The POV actually works for what I am trying to acheive as does the porportions of the body. WOW, this board really ROCKS HARD, thanks all!! Laughing

ps -- the AD hasn't gotten back to me yet. I think he's gone for the holidays.

Colours work splendidly, and the movement-like sketchiness of the background works, if possibly, even better. I really -enjoy- looking at this, regardless of perhaps anatomical issues - or perspective issues. Sometimes, I think, anatomy and perspective need to go fly out the window in favour for what is pleasing and wonderful to the eye.

This is.

Besides, I can't see that you aimed for super-realism, so the any little issue I could find here, would be that I'd like just a -tiny- difference in the colour of the great snake/worm to make it just a little more easy for the eyes to glide over to it.

Other than that, damn, great work.

bluetraveller: the picture IS from your POV. Except you're above him, looking down at him.
this here is the rough anatomical structure of the painting:

The legs appear a bit long
a. because of style
b. his back is bent
c. because they're closer to you (so they appear larger - perspective does that Very Happy )

It would be nice if people who posted crits about anatomy and perspective would actually know a little something about anatomy and perspective.

But that's just my opinion.

I must agree with sherban. Crit for crit's sake, when none is required, does much more harm than good. Don't create problems where there are none just for the sake of it.

Perhaps if you had given your opinion in a couple of short lines, this wouldn't have been such an issue(everyone's input is of use). By throwing up a paintover on anatomy/persp you are stating you know more about practical fundamentals than the artist. It's a big thing to say, and you should think about the ramifications before doing so.

I also think your lecture on anatomy and perspective further down from your original post was somewhat 'out of place' in this thread. While it's true some artists mask poor fundmental skills with 'stylisation', this is certainly not the case here. The artists has obviously studied anatomy and knows how to distort for proper effect.

Thanks guys. I took out some of those serrated looking edges on the brush strokes and showed it to the AD. He just wanted a little more color on the snake to help make it pop and that was that. I mail it off this afternoon. You can see the final version on my webpage. Lates!
