Done as an anatomy study in Chavant Professional Plasteline, an oil based clay. I had a real skull as reference. Lifesize.

And a bit more from below:

The underside is a bit simplified and the surface is rather smoothed than realistically textured. I also got a bit lazy with the teeth in the end, the clay was just too soft for that.

Simply amazing!

In wich ways is the sculpting helping you understand form? Are there any areas in particular, or is it all round. I mean do you notice things about light for instance that you didn't know beforehand, light and not shape or straight anatomy I mean.

Am I making sense?

Have you seen the making-of of "Ice Age" or "Shrek"? They had some really skilled modelling guys doing those plasteline things they used for capturing the surface points and bulding up a 3d-mesh with that data. Damn the amount of detail they put into those models was amazing, especially in "Ice Age". I'm saying all of this 'cos your model looks really pro-kick ass. Get into some seriouz biz damnit.

Do you have other works done in clay?
And what clay do you use?

Thanks, everyone. Smile

Sukhoi: It's about learning the shapes and shape relations. Shape of eye sockets, relation to frontal bone, connection to nasal bone, etc.

Flat: The dog Scud from Toy Story was made the same way. I'd love to do more sculpting but have to provide a steady income so this requires a good plan.

silber: Only the small examples on my site (not counting small pieces done ages ago). This is my first serious sculpt. Clay is Chavant Professional Plasteline, a rather soft sulphur based clay. As it is oil based it will not dry or crack. You have to take a mold if you want something that will last.
