Well.. I think its a great amount of detail... but somehow it doesnt really seem Comic-book like to me... not really the comic book style of drawing... Im not sure why.. although I could be on crack too...
anyways.. i really like the detail in this.. especially the environment and the car.. thats pretty cool. |

wow! This is really nice! I like the action involved. Nice style!
The only suggestion i would have is to pay closer attention to the colour values especially around the lower body. It seems to be blended into the same tonal background making it hard to distinguish the background/foreground sequence. I took the image and greyscaled it to compare values. Allow the background to recede by reducing detail, darkening or lightening tone or blurring. Or...what would happen if you changed the colour of her pants/nylons? What would happen if you darken the area in the room enshrining the two boxers? Just some thoughts...
I really like the car and the very nice line value and perspective you chose. Very well-thought composition.

Run Girl, don't ever let them take your butter cube!
I like the picture though, the perspective is great and there's a huge amount of detail on the background, none of which sucks I've never understood the whole pantleg and underwear look, but she's pretty cool. is the rest of the page still in black and white? |

awesome!
distribution of detail/contrast is right on. everything is nicely balanced.
I hope this was not from your humanoids project. is it still going ahead? _________________

Awetopsy - hehe could be why it went nowhere. But I do think there is room for experimentation in comics- not everything needs to be "comic booky." Like Ashley Woods' stuff for instance - I kind of dig it, it's really far away from traditional comics look.
bluetraveller - cool, very helpful observations, thank you. It does blend in a bit visually there.
simoon - haha. Oh well, it's why I'm not a fashion designer. The page is meant to be all colored, but I just hadn't gotten to those panels yet.
Eric Drobile, thanks.
Bob - that sounds cool - what publisher will be putting that out?
Max Kulich - argh, I see - it is distracting.
Rinaldo - cool, thanks. The Humanoids gig I just finished a week or so ago - it's why I have some spare time and now I'm spamming the board with all this crap. I've got another small thing on the cover of a Wildstorm book coming out in a month or two. _________________ Francis Tsai

sweet, if this is anything to go by it should kick ass.
just reading the above crits, I couldn't disagree more =x. this pic reads beautifully to my eye. I can't stop looking at it. Just give me a whole book like this and I'll be a happy man:P
post more stuff like this if ya got it. your line and colour style is perfectly suited to comics.
=)
(apologies if that's too much possative feedback, Idunno what came over my normaly dismal negative self) _________________

I dunno I really like to see something else than the typical north american comic book. You must know of Gimenez and the Mtabarons..
Anyway as for that cube thing I instantly thought of Synj |

The comments in this thread make me laugh. Yeah Francis, this is no comic book art, didn't you know that you must draw like Mad!
This is brilliant. It has the best elements of european graphic novels and older Japanese stuff. Your talent as an architectural designer really shows in your lines and your perspective. Just awesome.
I really want to know the story behind this. The cube in her hand is a very moebius-esque oddity.
Did you ever get my reply to your email? _________________ Adi

Rinaldo - thanks, I'm glad you approve. I think we probably have similar tastes in what we'd like to see in comics. I included another image, the one I mentioned before. This is the style I would like to do a book in... the work for Humanoids is a bit more tightly rendered.
egerie - Yah, Juan Gimenez is cool. I've been looking at the Metabarons stuff, hopefully they will let me take a crack at it sometime.
adi - Hey man, long time. This is just your basic chick running from peril in a dystopian futuristic society, with a yellow cube in her hand. You know just like in Star Wars. Thank you very much for the glowing review - I'm with you though, I think there's so much cool stuff going on in comics in other countries. It would be great to get some of that influence into some of the American comics. Can't wait to see your stuff when it comes out. I got a reply a while back - I'll drop you a note tonight.
bOb - cool I look forward to seeing those.
Hm, I hope posting this doesn't get me into troubles...

Max Kulich - yah, there's a good story; it will be used on the cover of Wildstorm's book "The Resistance," (I was told #7, but let's wait and see) which is about a group of underground freedom fighter types in a futuristic society.
Shiro - I hope there's more, hehe. Right now I don't know for sure...
egerie - Man, his stuff is great. I bought his portfolio at the comic con. I can't wait to see that stuff in print. Yes, I just finished a short story for Metal Hurlant. I don't know when that will be printed, it's up to the editor over there. _________________ Francis Tsai
