I have a problem.. When I am painting in photoshop and trying to make something look more smooth it always ends up so I can still see my strokes. Can someone give me some tips in doing that? Or maybe some links for some good tutorials?

Check out an image i've done and you can see what i mean:

use bigger brushes, or use less power on the brush.

For the final strokes, set your opacity quite low... 20-30% and then brush orver brush over brush... set it even as low as 7% to 10%.

Click the image to see the original size ... I used the smudge tool in Photoshop ... 10% strength.

And now I know why I use the Gimp Exclamation

do you use a tablet? anyways, keep your hand on the alt key, pick up the color and with the brush set on low opacity, keep on picking up the color and workin it.

Hi Jesper!

This is the way I do it in two steps:

First I paint big shapes with a softbrush 100% hardness. Opasity 50

Thwn I take the sotfbrush again with 0% hardness and paint over it again and again. Opasity 10

Maybe that helps a bit.

If so what are you referring to when you say

you can try a big soft edge airbrush with low(~10%) opacity

glaze your brush a few times in the same area and it would have a nice smooth color build-up

HE means PS I'm pritty sure. When u use a brush, u know the menue that u select the "type"(soft/hard/etc.) well once you select one of those brushes you can double clikc on the small picture that comes with it. (once you click on the sof/hard/etc. brush and click on the screen beside the arow for the drop down menue to select yer brushes is an image) once you double click that image you will be able to select/adjust the hardness of the brush.

Hope this helps Razz

Looks like you're using hard-edged brushes. If you want smooth transitions, it's probably best to use soft-edged brushes. And the lower the opacity, the better. I would avoid smudge/blur, just because it's a little hard to control the results.

http://tremonti.esmartdesign.com/index.html
( Exclamation Popup Exclamation )
All the images on that page are done with round brushes and the smudge tool. I use the smudge tool almost like a brush sometimes. That doesn't work in photoshop however. Don't know about Painter!!???

neff -- yo dude, there is NOTHING you can possibly think of that's against the rules (next to posting someone else's stuff that is). If your picture nees a photoshop3.0 lensflare then you gotta "bita i det sura pplet" as some of us say over here...

As for the fuzz about smooth brushstrokes... seriously guys, why bother? i kind of like it rough, dont you? =)

peace and love guys!

/mon

Max,

First of all thanks for sharing your knowledge Smile

1- When you say: "... softbrush 100% hardness.."

softbrush ?!?!
When you put 100% hardness, the brush is not softbrush but hardbrush !
What you are trying to say ???

You use Mode = Normal ?

"...Opasity 50..."

Opasity= pressure ?

2- Normaly when you paint, what image size you use (2500,3000) Pixels ?
3 - Normaly what brush size you use... ok, depends on image size ;P
4 - You use the AirBrush tool. I am correct ?
5 - Do you have more examples how you do your stuff (tutorials or more images)
?

Note:
I am trying to open an account at (http://www.8ung.at/), but i dont understand
nothing (language)...
I have filled the form (webspace) totay.... i have to do anything or only wait
Razz

Thanks for all Smile

Best regards,

RBFIGUEIRA

hi

rbfigueira: Alright, I'll explain it to you.

1. Sorry, I meant the bush tool

No, the brush tool is still the brush tool also with 100% hardness.
That's the stroke with the brush tool at 100%hardness:

Setting:

And this with the pencil tool (doesn't matter which hardness:

Setting:

Opasity: 50 Mode: normal

>>Opasity= pressure ?<<
NO, Opasity is the transparency of the stroke:

And pressure is the sensitiveness of your wacom by pressurization
(my english is bad, hope you understand...):

2. Depands on the detail I want to achieve.
For speedpaintings I use 1000 x 1000.
More detailed images need at least 2000 x 2000.
At this resolution I can only work in greyscale 'cause my computer is crap....chz

3. depands on my computer which is....I mentioned already.
I made my own brushes:

200 and 300 are too big for a resolution of 2000 x 2000 [ for my comp. ]

4. Yes, also, it's named brushtool in ps7

5. Not many, just this one:
http://www.8ung.at/max.kulich/sijun/frodobagginssteps.jpg

>>>Note:<<<

If you've done everything right just wait until you get your mail with the password and stuff.
8ung.at is very good ( I think ) and you can dissable the pop ups [NeFF]
It isn't too slow......or, I don't know.
It works great for me without any problems....

Hope I could help!

- max

When I try to get a smooth area I also like to use a combination of hard & soft brushes.

Besides holding the ALT key to sample colors, I tend to use alot the Braket Keys [], this allows me to size Up of Down the brush while I'm painting and, better yet, control the softness of the brush when I hold them in combination with the SHIFT key.

So if you like to keep painting instead of digging for a menu, control the softness with SHIFT+[ or SHIFT+]

I hope it helps.
