Here is the digital painting I did for the trade paperback of a new Demon Wars series by R. A. Salvatore being published by my company. I was told to go "Hildebrandt" on it, and I'm pretty happy with the results. The main hero is fighting giants, one of which is scarred up at his feet. The only reference I used is a photo of mountains, but I painted those in. Any comments?

The jpeg doesn't show any of the painterly detail, but the print version looks real good.

That is an astonishing accomplishment with no reference.

I think the Hildebrandts would be proud.

great anatomy and details. the background sky doesnt seem to fit all that well though, has some sort of fractal look to it. I also think it could benefit alot from more dramatic lighting and warmer less yellowish skin tones. overall though really impressive.

Here are the prelim sketches I did for the cover. The first is a 5 minute rough I did in Photoshop, the second is a 15 minute pencil drawing I did after feedback, which I used as the guide for the painting, modifying it as I worked as elements were completed.

Greetings Brando,

I think you did a hell of a job. I think I can bypass the obvious praises and just add a small crit. The only thing that stuck out to me in this painting is that all your mountain gaints look like clones of one another. Same bald spot, hair, nose, ears, clothes. Might be cool to add / change some of the facial features (smaller/bigger nose, ears, eyebrows, different tattoos, ear rings, ect.) and clothing a bit.

I love the composition. It's very classic for the genre. It works really well.

Cheers,

Shawn

Yeah, I know what you mean about the identical giants. The refernce they had me used has them all looking alike excpet for arm tattoos and jewelry (same balding head, dark hair, etc.) I just talked it over and have permission to add some small variations so they don't look so identical. I'll post it real soon.

more great stuff. i like this style as well as the other one you recently posted, but my only issue is the hero's face - i can't figure out what he's looking at... it looks like there might be more giants off-page to the left. is that right? great painterly touch though. Smile

Here it is with some approved revisions. I added different patterns of balding and some beadwork in the beards, as well as some more tattooing. They still look very similar, but not as clonish like the original artist had made them look.

The detail is fantastic...one crit though..There's no depth, everything sorta looks like its all the same distance away from the viewer which makes it look a bit flat, a very minor thing, just thought I'd mention it.

I would have to agree with kaylon, although the drawing and details are awesome. the lighting is problimatic. especialy from an illustration point of view.
main thing is that the source seems to be from the viewers pov (which seems unnatural), and even then it changes a lot.
also everything has a failry high contrast. lots of bright highlights and stuff which makes it hard to figure out the main point of interest.
there is no real reflective light either. so a lot of objects lack depth.

I realise a lot of this is style based. considering you do a lot of comics. if you really wanted ot keep the unique sculptural lighting style. the main things holding it back are lack of interest and eyeflow. too many things saying "look at me". just focus on giving the main points of interest the most contrast.

apolgies if that comes across as overly harsh. the image has a nice graphic look that I love. and the drawing is more than solid.

I see what you guys said about seperation. I did a few more revisions to help the figures seperate into different depth planes and reposted the image. The drop shadow from the main figure should be shown now in the above revised image, along with other changes.

Wouldn't the stark white snowy mountains be absorbing more of those colors from the sky?

Other than that, I dig it. Great work on the characters. Smile

Good call, Malachi. Let me see what I can do. I don't know why I got so local on this piece, I think it was just all the detail.
