This painting started as an exercise. I wanted to see if I could paint a somewhat realistic body using absolutely no reference. It took about 14 hours, spread over a few days, on photoshop 7. Only tool used was the paintbrush tool. No smudge or dodge but for the effects layers.

very cool. You managed to make everything sharp and still so smooth that no ugly edges are visible. No pixels or raw brush strokes visible at all. Like you have spend ages on antialiasing. Very well done.

It's nice but I have a question/comment
No offence, but why do you choose to paint a red devil with claws & horns that hides in shadow if this is a exercise to challenge yourself in anatomic realism ...from mind. Wouldn't it be more instructive then to do a real person with real skin colors and less lighting that hides the anatomy and pose ? Rolling Eyes

Joachim: Eh eh eh... good point! I guess I was trying to achieve a "Caravaggio" feel to the image. I wanted the body to come out of the darkness, so that I had to force myself to figure out how the light would fall on each body part in the most realistic way possible. Usually, my exercises fall along the same lines as the type of image you suggested, but while drawing this one I wanted to break away from the routine and see if I could handle dramatic dramatic lighting and strong shadows.
Thank you for the comment!

joachim, anatomy is anatomy. it doesnt matter if it doesnt have realistic skin tones. i dont understand why you think that.
