James Gurney, way back before he made millions from the Dinotopia franchise, was background artist on an animated film called Fire & Ice. The interesting thing is that the other background artist on it was Thomas Kinkade (mentioned twice in this thread already), and the art director on the film was.... wait for it... FRANK FRAZETTA!
I've been after this film for years but not even amazon.com has it listed.
(quick addition to my list; John Berkey. Love them spaceships.)

I saw "Fire & Ice" a few years back. The only thing I really remember about it is the rotoscoped animation. That stuff never looks quite right.

And I believe the director of Fire and Ice was Baskshi, which explains the rotoscoping :p

Ralph Bakshi -- he did a lot of animated stuff like Fritz the Cat, Street Fight, and (I believe) Mighty Mouse. I think he also did Lord of the Rings.

In no particular order:
Rebrant, Leonardo Da Vinci, Vermeer (sp), Hopper, Caneleto, Waterhouse, Augustus John, Waterhouse, Rodney Mathews, Roger Dean, Tim White, Chris Moore, Chris Foss, Patrick Woodcroft, erm.. one of the Bitmap Brothers (used to love his 8bit stuff on the amiga), Lazur, Nero, Made, Dhabih is cool too
Those are all artists who have made my jaw drop and/or influenced my work a great deal. There are many other's who's names don't spring directly to mind but I'm always learning from the work of others. |

My bad, I shouldn't try to spell animator's names when it's late ;-)

He's not a great art hero, but he's damn good at designing things. Anyone been to phong.com? |

Yeah, Baskshi did the Lord of the Rings animated movie, and ruined a movie with great potentail in the process. Hopefully Peter Jackson's interpretation will be better.
And while I'm on the subject of Lord of the Rings, did anyone besides me love the concept art for the films? You can see it at http://www.lordoftherings.net under "creation". |

Can't believe anyone didn't mention Stan Sakai. Sheesh.
Right up there would be Masamune Shirow as well...
Anyone mention David Mack? His Kabuki series is pure genius.
The list goes on and on, but these are definately the three names that automatically jump to mind. |

There are a couple of guys that did a whole bunch of cool shit back in the seventies and eighties. Roger and Martin Dean. I think they were schooled in mechanical and industrial technical drafting so their shit is very detail oriented. They did a lot of the old Yes album covers. They also have some excellent typefaces they made up. Check out the books "Views" and "Magnetic Storm the successor to Views".
Other heros of mine are MC Echer and HR Gieger |

Threnody, I TOTALLY dig all the LOTR they've shown so far, the stuff on the site is awesome. I can't wait to see a trailer or a teaser or something from this film...
