Hey, it worked! Congratulations. You may want to try adding shading to the green skin tone by painting a darker green rather than just blurring the black lines to create that effect. If you decide to do this, use a green that is cooler or more muted than the base green color (as well as darker) to give it more depth. Also you may want to use a dark green for adding the texture to his skin instead of black. Skin texture is subtle and the black makes it look like deep lines or scars rather than texture. Are you working in layers? _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

yes the colors are on one layer the ink lines on another and the background has its own layer. what about the shell should i use a noise filter? or just go in manually to give it depth? any feed back would be appreciated. I will go in and try the darker shading rather than smudging my ink lines and post it again _________________ Say would you like a chocolate covered pretzel? |

Personally I don't care much for filters, cause you don't learn anything from using them.
I guess I would have the same comments about the texture on his shell as those I said about his skin. You'll have more control over how deeply embossed the texture appears if you paint it in color rather than black line. (you can't make a lighter value black line, black is black)
This will also help it look less busy. The Black line will just hold the shape of the shell, while the painted lines will describe the textures on the shell in a more subtle way. The same holds true here with choosing a color as well. I would choose a brown that's different from the shell's base color (not just darker). Since your light source is yellow, I would probably choose a cooler brown for the shadows (and textures) on both the skin and the shell. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. I know what your saying. The thing is i am going for a pen and ink look yet also with the color variations any suggestions on how to go about that? what comes to mind to explain is your typical spawn comic. Lots of pen and ink detail with awesome liquid like coloring. _________________ Say would you like a chocolate covered pretzel? |

Hey Ryknow, Sorry if I wasn't super helpful last time. I do think the color is improved, and you're moving in the right direction. What I was trying to explain (and not doing it very well) is that using the heavy black line to depict both the edges of forms and the texture on surfaces wasn't working for you. I didn't mean for you not to put in some knarly textures if you want them though. I just thought that the textures would read better if they were done with a dark color or a thinner more delicate black line than the nice thick one you have describing the form (I like the kind of thick scratchy line you're using by the way). Anyway I hope this picture is worth a thousand words:

hi. for your typical comics-style, there are three distinct stages: pencilling, inking, and colouring. the most important of these is, arguably, pencilling. you can jump straight in with the wacom, which i heard is how brian bolland now gets the job done, but it's probably easier for us mere mortals to stick to the analogue for this drawing stage.
when you're happy with your lineart, ink it. whether on the comp or with a brush or pen is up to you. i can't cover the whole art of inking here - it would take a whole book; check out the one gary martin wrote.
then colour it in photoshop, using the tutorials on comiccolors.com
i wouldn't try to do all three stages at once, if you want that classic 'comics' feel. good luck! ![Smile](images/smiles/icon_smile.gif) |
