Here are some more image studies. Mostly still just trying to learn lighting and color recognition without sampling the original. Average about an hour, though the urban one took a little over 2 Hrs. Trying all kinds of different techniques. The urban one was done almost exclusively with a square hard-edged brush. the two factory shots were from photos posted by someone on the board a while ago. I don't remember who. If anyone remembers, let me know so I can give him due credit!

Fun to do something for no reason again.
this is the typical, get someone to give you a task. This one was from my girlfriend..."do a streat with a rat" ....I wasn't very inventive

Joachim - I love it! great lighting.
Duracel - Alas, I'm not quite there yet... Working from reference is helping me to understand lighting and color better. Next step is to try to apply the color pallettes to original scenes. I'll be taking a plein-air landscape painting class in the new year, hopefully painting from life will be bigger step closer.
Dr. Bang - I hate you too!! ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif) _________________ www.saunderscreative.com |

The nautilus is the coolest design ever. Esp when it is running at speed with the lights on!
I remember balistic did some much better water than this, go look at his.
hmm what I meant by that cryptic think paint thing was to just think about what you want to paint before you do it. Or just as important, what not to paint. If you don't, you will end up "licking" it to death. That means sitting there and dabbing here and there and looking at it from under your arm, convincing yourself it looks ok, and end the end dodging and burning... You get the picture.
The strength of an image, to me, is pretty much set in the block in. If it does not live then, forget it. And with the digital tool, you can start over and over, use layers, etc. There is no excuse to go further with something that is not right from the start. I have a weird tick that you should be able to stop a painting at any time and have it stand on it's own. Read the sargent notes about getting the head exactly on the shoulders. No features, just the big masses really correct. Painting becomes easy again! Now pardon me, my Pia Zadora shrine site lies fallow....
But don't take all this too seriously- maybe what I am saying is get the basic stuff correct before detailing it. Just my own way I guess. |

This was inspired by the cover of a book I had since my childhood. A Ladybird book called "the story of arms and armour"

Very sound advice. I'm slowly learning to limit my licks, but I still tend to over-work things . . . I like painting here at the office because I've got a rolley chair and a cement floor, so I can instantly put about 15' between myself and an image if I feel like I'm beating it to death. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

Craig,
But then when is a drawing finished? Should one be able to also work on a piece forever and always have it look good? How do you decide when to stop? on a personal piece. |
