Hey all, I will be buying a tablet early next year. (Tax Return & Agreement with Wife.)
Anyway, I have been looking around and from the limited information I can find, Wacom seems to be the way to go. At this point I kinda have set on the 12x12 Intuios. However, since there dosent seem to be much out there on other brands, I want to know if this is the brand to buy? (mostly picked due to compatability w/ photoshop!)
Also, if anybody can point me to digital art tutorials I would appreciate it. My background is with pencils, water colors, markers (there cheep, dont laugh..... to hard.) I do some comic book style work, but mostly cartoon alian style people (something my little ones can watch me draw without the wife worrying about them seeing something inapropriate.)
Hope to be able to post digital art here myself soon!!! _________________

wacom is the way to go. on wacom.com, you can take part in a questionnaire thatll tell you what tablet might possibly suit you best. but yeah. 12x12 sounds the shit. enjoy
ps. most people consult many art forums before making a big purchase like that, so forums have a wealth of past info, so try use the search feature. people usually do get annoyed if they have many threads about the same topic cropping up all the time. also you can find loadsa other interesting stuff there aswell ![Wink](images/smiles/icon_wink.gif)

Allen - I am not an expert on tablets and the options, but I did just buy one this month. After a bunch of research and opinions from pros, and I ended up with a Wacom. As far as pressure points (sensitivity), reliability, etc, I think Wacom is the way to go. Within the Wacom family, I would recommend the Intuos. And I THINK they just came out with an Intuos 2. Try looking through the Wacom site. When you are ready to buy, so you don't blow your entire tax return, look for an unopened or new one on eBay... many people are selling them.
I do comic coloring with my Wacom (Intuos), and the 4x5" tablet is more than enough. It is proportioned to the monitor so the edges of the tablet are literally the edges of my screen. Any larger tablet would have driven me crazy because I would be picking up my entire arm to reach the edges of the tablet/monitor. HOWEVER, your field is different, and a large tablet might be what you need - just keep in mind how much you will be moving your arm. Hopefully some other artists will respond to the size issue.
Oh, and the Wacom works like a dream with Photoshop. |

Go for the 12x9 instead of the 12x12. Your monitor is rectangular, not square.
A square tablet makes very little sense . . . I'm surprised Wacom ever made them. I've got a 12x12, and in order to have proper proportion when drawing, I have to deactivate the bottom three inches of the surface. It's not problematic, it's just 3 inches of wasted tablet (and money). _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

balistic is right. Getting a 12x12 seems like a bad investment. I recently turned off the bottom 3" of the tablet too. |

go in ur local dealer and try them
i think its better to buy a "big" one if you used to paint (large movements) , but if you like me used to make only pencils (sneaky precise movements) then a wacom graphyre 4x5 is far big enough (and very cheap).
I think its important to try them. |

Wow, good information all. I do draw with my hole arm. So I'll probably go with a bigger model. However the 12x12 sounds kinda quarky. So let me get this right, the size of the resolution on the pad is directly linked to the size of the resolution on the moniter?
In other words, do get the same stroke/line on the screen, the larger the pad the larger the stroke must be?
If thats the case I think I might have to down size =P _________________

the tablet is mapped out spot for spot to correspond to your monitor. The top right corner of the tablet will be the top right corner of your monitor and the middle of the tablet will be the middle of your monitor so getting a tablet that is closer in porpotion to a monitor is wise. |
