Hello,
This is created for visualization of a future sculpture installation to show to specific professors. My friend wanted me to make a 3d design based on his ideas for the proposal of his show idea. This is the result. I put the warning because this could be offensive to some. Please keep this in mind before viewing these images.

Look under the renders called penis and an "s" on the end of the name. S denotes the small renders while the others are the larger renders.
Wings3d: Modeler
Photoshop 7: Texturing
UV Mapper: Mapper
Deep Exploration: Converter
Truespace: Everything Else
Here is an example of one of the renders:
I appreciate any feedback.
Thanks,

hah, looks like a first year art student project (stuff like melted doll parts are in the same category). Could you tell us what the idea is behind this? We're mostly designers and illustrators and don't really have the time or inclination to sit for half and hour and ponder the meaning of a penis forest. |

If there's a meaning behind that, you two are the only ones who'll get it. To me it seems like a pseudo-intellectual concept designed only to elicit a response, not really making a point or anything, but being different just for the sake of being different. I agree with Isric, these kinds of things are right up there with melted doll parts.
But the concept wasn't your idea, so I won't skewer than anymore. From a technical standpoint, I would say it needs a little work. The penises are clearly identifiable as such, but the textures scare me. If I ever looked down and saw that, I'd kill myself. It's just a little too bumpy and spongy. Smooth them out a little. Hopefully you've got a good reference at your immediate disposal. |

This probably doesn't need to be said, but I really don't get it either.
The one part I do get is that is for a "show idea" and regardless of the type of show, I PERSONALLY AM NOT INTERESTED IN LEGIONS OF PENIS, and thus wouldn't watch/go/see/do it. |

I'm seeing a cross surrounded by a bunch of dix.
I will assume that the symbol of the cross is intentional, and the phalic recreations are meant to say something about the state of religion? |

I'm sorry, but I truly cannot think of a single positive thing to say about this. |

I appreciate the feedback. This piece was meant to give the artist a visual idea of what his concept would look like. Also it was a way to show the professor visually his proposal for his senior(college)show. The creation of it was basicly a 3d sketch turned into something more.
You are correct to see a cross in the empty space between the penises. He plans on making a plaster life casts from a mold of his penis. The artist's intention is to show the human side of Christ. In the bible and in christianity focuses less on the fact that Christ was also human. Being human he had male urges. The movie the "Last Temptation of Christ" had some influence on his idea. The name of his piece will be Reserection
Now, is this a shock piece?
Yes
Is shock art overdone?
Yes
Will the concept he hopes to convey come across to the viewers?
Perhaps, but probably not.
I was less concerned with the subject matter but more on the challenge of creating a space based on a concept given. Personally I like the artwork to stand on its own and not have a booklet to read to understand the "concept."
Enough said on that...
The texture on the phalli is supposed to be rough or decayed plaster. Penises are meant to be somewhat basic. I am not sure that hurts or helps the piece.
Tinusch: Are you saying the bump mapping is a little too busy and distracts from the whole of the image?
Thanks,
-B |

.... i dont really understand what you want us to crit. To me it looks like you instanced a bunch or crappily modeled 'penises'. I dont think this would make an interesting sculpture at all. also it would be helpful if you linked the images yourself and not make others sift through stuff. anyways... try again. |

sorry, but to me that sounds utterly and completely retarded. Just my opinion though, others might very much get off from seeing 300 molds of a confused persons penis in an odd pattern... |

OK. I understand. Does a penis have symbolic value to emphasize the human side of a "god" ? Might be...but why showing dozens of penisses to form an empty intellectual cross ? Simply try to wonderfully depict christ in very classic way, but without his "underwear" he always has. Humble but skillfull...way more shocking than 100 penisses.

how bout replace the penis with arms, bombs, military weapons....etc
Those crazy penis would just take away the seriousness of the picture. First, i thought this picture is a joke, but you sound so serrious so thats why i'm confused. |

hey.. nice idea starglider2.
Much better then having penises in an inverted cross.. which IMHO seems a little boring... yawn..
but seeing a full size Jesus figure with a huge boner and soft smile, on the cross.. (maybe some chick doing her thing) That would be awesome!
Animatronics would be a master bonus.
then there wouldn't be so much to explain.
As for the 3d renderings. Not very pretty but they serve their purpose well. If it was looking just awesome, it might divert attention a little from the original idea.

I don't see anything wrong with the idea at all. *shrugs*
Personally, I would have opted to photograph it from a more centered angle. But then, this could be an Installation sculpture, and the final composition might look quite different.
I think that might be where so much of the negativity of the others comes from. It's really easy to say "this image doesn't make sense". |

They all have the same texture.
The lighting is pretty poor too. _________________ brian.prince|light.comp.paint |

If Flat ever dies, I'm sure he'll be entombed by a huge army of terracotta penises, and it may very well look like this. |
