It is a bit of a rush job, had to get it done in a day. Can anyone give me a few pointers on depth. I've been reading about it, but it doesn't seem to help me, I also seem to get much better depth from conte and vine charcoal.

the drawing is cool. But the problem with painting is that it looks too flat. Try to paint to render volume, not to render texture. That's more important i think. You should also try to use more contrast in your colors, highlights etc..
Anyway, good job :-)

Thanks dude, I'm doing an image right now trying to do just what you said. My images are always so damned flat, ,don't know what my deal is, I just never render depth right. Eventauly I've got to get the hang of it with all the life drawing I do all day. =] Thanks again.

when you shade dont go into detail at the beginig. Think about everythink in general.

on the pic below there are two balls, on left is show how youre shanding and on the right how you should do it.

now, knowing this you would shade that spherical part of armor on the black dude differently. When yore done with that you can start thinking about details, add texture and so on...

here is my overpaint of the black dude, i think i made the contrast to strong but that isnt so important

hope this helps
