Hey
a tip on how to make hair in photoshop 7.
This is a tip that I earlier gave to The_Insider, thought that maybe someone could be helped by this.
This is an idea i came up with when i once doodled around in photoshop:
You use the smudge tool and the set it to around 80% or less,(youll have to play a little with that setting). Then you use a Rough Round Bristle brush, nearly at the bottom in the brushes in Photoshop 7. Then you simply smudge the hair area so it looks like hair-straws.
I hope that you use Photoshop 7.
I have attached an image to show you:
An image with the method used:

Wait wait wait !
I would say it's a good tip.
You just have to work on your tecnique yourself.
If you choose the tool right it will be very powerful for painting hair.

Using the smudge tool is not bad if you can use it right.
If you can't don't use it.
There aren't any bad or good tools in PS.
The way you use them is bad or good.

I don't understand these reactions.
1) Matthew shares a technique that can be useful for someone else e.g. to create fur. I always thought of that as the purpose of a forum. You don't have to follow his instructions, if you don't like them.
2) Why shouldn't we use the smudge-tool, the lens-flares, dodge and burn etc. ? If the result is good - why not!
(btw. what do you think about the "grass"-brush in PS 7 ?)
Max Kulich was faster - sorry for posting the same points again.

ok ok children lets not get in a fight here.
here is how I do hair. (in photoshop)
here are the brushes I use:
First I take the largest brush (64px)@ about 70 opacity and I lay down a base color:
then I go over it with the same settings, and same color:
then I pick a darker shade and switch to the 32px brush:
Then I pick an even darker shade and switch to the 16px brush and make sure my motions follow the contour of the object Im putting hair on, in this case the back of the head:
Now here is where the detail starts. I then pick the original color and dumb down some of those bold dark strokes by stroking over top of them as to give the appearance of them being behind lighter hair:

then I start adding the darker shadow by selecting the darker color again and putting it where the shadow of the back of the head would be.
and same thing with highlights where the highlights of the head would be (this assumes that the light is overhead). and over theselast wo steps Im swithching between the 16px and the 11px brushes.
andfinally I take the 2px brush and add some detail strokes to give the impression of stray hairs:
I hope this helps somebody.
[edit] dont be afraid to experiment with colors, In this brunette head of hair I have yellow, deep red, 2 shades of brown and a white. play with it.

I agreed with Max and francmidi. I am happy to see people share their tips.
lot of stuff in the nature can look like what Matthew tip result...hair, fur, gress, So if use it on landscape or dog etc.
Why not pick up his tip and use it with your own style. |

picking on certain tools is pretty narrow minded. if it's clear when someone uses a tool and uses it poorly, say so. but don't tell everyone that the tool should never be used. taking the smudge tool as an example, i know enayla uses or has used it extensively in the past for good results. just because the vast majority of beginners abuse these tools doesnt make them useless. |

whats the problem with hairs ? is it that exceptionally different from any other thing to draw ? i guess it all comes down to study the "feel" of the hair (curliness, shading, "weight"..) like any other obstacle to train your skills on.
Study some works by Davinci, Michelangelo or any other master...the best ! |

Hi,
I personally find it amazing how people can be so nasty to someone sharing something that they find helpful. Thanks for the tips Mathew. Thanks also to the people in this thread who have been polite.
Photoshop is an awesome tool and anyone who owns a copy should use it anyway they wish.
If you want to put a tip up then do it. Ungrateful people are not your target anyway.
thanks. |
