It is very quick...I was working hard today--started early this afternoon and knocked off at 3 AM...then I had to draw a rat. I had that ratty mood going. But it had to be quick to satisfy my guilty conscience which is screaming "Work more, dammit!"

So I drew this sad, dying rat.

I had this song in the back of my mind from "Aida":

"O terra, addio; addio, valle di pianti...
Sogno di gaudio che in dolore svan.
A noi si schiude il ciel e l'alme erranti
Volano al raggio dell'interno d."

looks great, one of your best imo.
i like the way the rat seems like it's about to leave our field of view , leaving the emptyness of the background as the main star of this piece.

I like this one better then some of your more recent ones, I think because this has a higher visual impact with the black foreground.

Normally, I'd say your composition is backwards, but I agree with Bilbo on this one. Facing the rat the other way really works for the mood of this image. No critiques really. Just a really nice painting that succeeds in invoking a feeling.

Thanks for letting us see it

later,
Brian

Sorry I am so rude and didn't reply to you guys right away. I forgot I posted on Sijun. Shame on me.

Bilbo - Thank you! I am glad you like the composition--I was a bit doubtful about having the rat QUITE so far to the left...but it seems to have worked out okay!

merlyns - Thank you! I do have a tutorial on clouds--it's in the technique section at www.epilogue.net (not sure of the exact URL). It is a bit old, so the example pictures are not as good as what I can do now...but the general principles still hold true for the type of painting I do.

thinkwink - Why, thank you very much!

Gimbal8 - It's dark blue and red, actually (the foreground)--but thank you. I felt like doing a really high-contrast piece for once.

liv the fish - Haha...normally, I'd agree. Glad you like it, and that the feeling I wanted gets across!

Aloys - Thank you! I had fun with these clouds.

EmKah - Hehehe...Rats, rats, rats make me crazy! One time I was crazy, so they put me in a rubber room--a rubber room with RATS, rats, rats make me.... *ahem*

Malachi - Thank you very much! Glad you like it.

ChiaNi - Eh...it's nice and all...but you should start your own thread, or put it in a thread that's actually intended for posting similar pieces. I put this thread up so I could get crits and/or comments on my work--it's not a general post-your-rat thread. It's not very good etiquette to hijack other people's threads, in general. I don't want to jump down your throat or anything...but people tend not to appreciate that kind of thing on this forum, from what I've seen.

socar, every two weeks or so, at college, I see a short bearded man walking wearing loose and partially unbuttoned shirt and jeans...carrying a cageful of white rats (or mice?) that are to be used by the students for laboratory classes. Your picture so reminded me of them because I'm pretty sure (although they all look alike) that they're all new rats every time.

In any case, beautiful picture...i actually didn't care much for rats before seeing your artwork and reading that little story about the rat in the city (from the rat's point of view) but now i'm rather fond of them.
